Implementing zoning laws, which would prevent the spread of the city, and instead promote better usage of already standing infrastructure. This would include the renovation of abandoned buildings and rent control. Consequences would have to be put into place in case the zoning laws are broken, such as fines and possible jail time. This solution, however, may cause a decrease in fuel tax revenue, since the more people live in the city, the less gas they use to go to work, than they would use if they lived in a suburban community.

A) Mixed land use could lower the impacts of urban sprawl. Mixed land use is when areas or buildings have many different kinds of land usage in one area. This includes residential areas, shopping and entertainment all in one area, such as a mall. When these are placed in an urban area, it increases the walk ability of the city and encourages people to stay in the urban area. Also, it is a more effective way of using the land that is already urbanized since more is condensed into that area.
B) However, mixed land use could lead to suburban businesses struggling. Many people will be going to mixed land areas due to its convenience. Everything that people need is all in one place, so they will not want to go farther to the suburbs for something they can get in the mixed land use areas. this brings in less consumers and customers for businesses in suburban areas.
