Born in Puerto Rico in 1931, Moreno’s early years in the industry were a struggle, as she was predominantly typecast into Hispanic roles. In 1961, however, she landed the part of Anita in “West Side Story,” and took home the Academy Award for Best Supporting Actress on account of it.

My mom and dad saw her back in the mid 60's at the Puerto Rican day parade in NYC on their honeymoon she was on one of those floats waving at people my mom said she looked beautiful. Loved her in the Electric Company used to watch it when I was a child ❤️

Rita, I am very proud of you. Not only you are an excellent actor you persevere in the strong woman you become. Although, it was not easy for a Puerto Rican woman trying to fit in a racist world, you made it happen. Many had try to dim your light and even turn it off, and they failed .
