Despite being nearly 30 years old, this is one of the best videos of a cobble that I’ve ever found. Whoever shot it did a good job keeping steady and framing the action.

I’m surprised how different the temperature ends up being between the top of the folds versus the interior—the yellow- and red-hot base of the pile versus the cooler and darker (but still no doubt hot enough to instantly ruin your life) exposed areas.

Thanks for posting this!

I don't have the words to describe steel mills. It's like absolute heavy, dirty industrial work.

Is there only one speed for this machinery? And if the emergency stop takes that long to actually stop then it really isn’t an emergency stop at all.

Shows the strength of steel, that it holds together throughout this process.

Seen this happen many of times at the mill I work at! We don't run that kind product but we do beam, s beam, angle, off leg angle, channel, mc channel and flats. We have had very easy clean ups and we have been down for hrs as well! All depends on how much damage the cobble has done. It happens... unpredictable because after you set up the mill for a size change or a product change, you never know what the first bar you run is going to do

At newer hot wire rod mills such cobbles go into the safety enclosures to ensure nobody gets hurt. At older mills a lot of grief given by mangled-tangled thing.

I'd work on Blooming mill and other secondary mills, where the flattest thing was just a strip like a leaf spring type of thing.

Nice-looking bit of abstract sculpture there.

Guess you could say that when it was coming down the line, it was...hot and heavy. Then it got all bent out of shape. It doesn't seem to take rejection well.
