Video description: An interceptor aircraft is a type of fighter aircraft designed specifically for the defensive interception role against an attacking enemy aircraft, particularly bombers and reconnaissance aircraft. There are two general classes of interceptor: some Light fighters, designed for high performance over short range, and; some heavy fighters, which are intended to operate over longer ranges, in contested airspace and adverse meteorological conditions. While the second type was exemplified, historically, by specialized night fighter and all-weather interceptor designs are, the integration of mid-air refueling, satellite navigation, on-board radar and beyond visual range (BVR) missile systems since the 1960s, has allowed most frontline fighter designs to fill the roles once reserved for specialised night/all-weather fighters. Through the 1960s and 1970s, the rapid improvements in design led to most air-superiority and multirole fighters, such as the Grumman F-14 Tomcat and McDonnell Douglas F-15 Eagle, having the performance to take on the point defense interception role, and the strategic threat moved from bombers to intercontinental ballistic missiles (ICBMs). Dedicated interceptor designs became rare, with the only widely used examples designed after the 1960s being the Tornado F3, Mikoyan MiG-25 "Foxbat", Mikoyan MiG-31 "Foxhound", and the Shenyang J-8 "Finback".
Enjoy watching. Cheers!

The Tornado was primarily a ground attack plane, the interceptor version was a afterthought, Euro fighter is a dedicated interceptor, with ground attack added as a afterthought.

The lack of the F-104A and S and F-106 is really serious

"were not going to be doing multi role air craft" #4 is the Phantom a multi role aircraft

Your omission of the F-106 is inexcusable. The fastest single engine combat aircraft, and dedicated interceptor that soldiered on with NORAD for over THIRTY YEARS, is mind bogling.

F104 Srarfighter: THE (pure) interceptor by definition, The Lightining should be much higher in the list. The list should have included the Convair F-102 Delta Dagger and the F-106 Delta Dart

The Mig-25 was like a rocket ship with a pilot. Mach 2.83.😲

F-14 Tomcat was a fighter/interceptor combination. It was not a dedicated interceptor like the others since it could dogfight exceptionally well. It could out-turn much smaller and lighter fighters and had an incredible turn rate. Also, it had a bubble canopy with full 360 degree view as well as maneuvering slats/flaps gave it incredible maneuverability for its size.

Half of them are not pure interceptors but a multi role fighters converted to an additional role of intercepting. MiG-25 and 35 are the examples of dedicated interceptors designed from scratch.

1:30-another unique feature of EE Lighting was its wing configuration
6:31-the F-14 Tomcat was the first of the new 4th-generation fighters

EE Lightning used to watch them when i was a kid the airfield was just down the road, awesome. FYI The airfield is called RAF Binbrook it's now disused by the RAF and just used for aircraft if they need to do an emergency landing, we used to go to crash gate 3 and watch the Lightning, s come into land from exercises and sometimes the odd Jaguar came into land.

Interesting how you ignore the F-15, and the first Mach 2+ interceptor, a 1956 design which arguably could still hold it's own in a dogfight with any aircraft today, the only fighter that has actually corrected a flat spin and landed itself intact AFTER the pilot ejected! The F-106 Delta Dart aka "The Six" (also one of the longest in front line service as well)

Su-15 have top speed 2650 km/h, not 2230 km/h, det is speed of su-17/22 and mig-21.

Correction on your technical facts. The Mig-25 heavily used Titanium and not stainless Steel. Aircraft do not use steel as it is too heavy. Aircraft use alloys of Aluminum and military fighters will employ Titanium for its strength and light weight properties. Also Titanium has a high melting point and was the primary metal used in the SR-71 for that reason.

All very interesting, yet the only allied interceptor to ever catch Concorde and pass it was the old English Electric Lightning, which it did on two occasions.

The Tornado was originally designed as a low level attack aircraft, and was later modified to perform in the interceptor role as well

The Phantom II was originally an interceptor by design. Like the F15, it proved to be a lot more versatile than it was designed originally. Also, imagine fitting a lightning with Spey engines instead of Avons?

for the last time the F-14 Tomcat was never a fully dedicated intercept aircraft. its base role was to be a literal fighter. Although the Tomcat was VERY fast it was not intended for this. That is what the AIM-54 phoenix was for.

WTF is the Phantom doing on this list? Also, where's the Fiddler? For a pure interceptor, the Foxhound is top but for me, nothing is as beautiful as the EEL 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁥󠁮󠁧󠁿!
