I just got back from Tokyo during golden week and it was amazing! Super crowded in some areas like shrines trains during peak hours and such but everything else was fine

I went to Japan during the golden week just gone, and it was fine

Disneyland was a little rammed but not unmanageable, Tokyo was also busy but still doable, although I didn’t do loads of touristy attractions since I’ve done the before

I also went to Okinawa during the latter part of golden week and it was dead so if that’s the only time you can go I’d just go

Golden Week occured bang smacked in the middle of my trip. Can confirm, it was so so busy. We had to line up to get on escalators/lifts etc. The moment GW ended, it was like a brand new world lol

Went to Japan on golden week. It was fun. Almost every shop I went to are on sale. Golden week discounts + tourist tax-free discounts are pretty good deals.

We mostly went sight seeing in gardens, museums and shopping districts.

Gotta say tho, I’d avoid theme parks during golden week—like Disneyland or USJ—because they are PACKED.

Golden week is totally fine. Just don't be on the busiest travel routes. I'd say avoid the entirety of summer, it's hell. Or go to the mountains or Hokkaido in summer.
