Heavy industries must decarbonise dramatically to reach net zero. Replacing fossil fuels with green hydrogen, created with renewable energy, is one way to reduce emissions. Examples of green hydrogen being used in various industries are emerging, but as the FT’s Sylvia Pfeifer reports, this carbon-free innovation faces a major challenge to scale up.

Capital expenditure on upgrading the power system seems huge for companies beyond the Global 500.

Question is quite simple really : can Europe produce an extra 400 TeraWatthour of very low carbon electricity, on top of all the « baseline » production of low carbon electricity needed to replace coal, fuel and natgas in the next 25 years ?

The real problem is that they _cannot_ afford to _not_ do it.

One one side we have renewable technologies to power retail & industry - on the other side we want to use a significant portion of that to create a "green " fossil fuel; why? What needs is hydrogen meeting that can't be met with the renewable technologies already in the pipeline to green a fossil fuel? Is it to meet carbon accounting requirements for old technology redundancy prevention? What am i missing in this equation?

i'm skeptical, the labeling "green" seems to imply that it's carbon positive, which I think we're not there yet....there's got to be a better way to get hydrogen than current methods...doesn't seem like a solution tbh as it is

Is the topic of decarbonization still relevant? In some countries, they are switching back to nuclear power and turning to coal-fired power plants.
