The most dangerous cactus in the Sonora Desert - minor disclaimer - I should have said it latches on to you like a parasite and doesnt grow on you per se - admittedly I described the most extreme case in that in most cases of only one or two they can normally be plucked out easily

I once volunteered to trim a cholla cactus. That was my first encounter with the cholla and I quickly learned to be very careful with it. Still, cholla was falling everywhere. Fortunately, the needles did not grow in me.

Last weekend I went to a public event in Las Vegas where the public was allowed to dig up cacti and yuccas to bring home. I dug up a cholla and planted it in my front yard. My foot accidentally rubbed up against the corner of this cactus and a quill went straight through my shoe. My little toe begin to throb and quickly formed a blister. Only one sticker yet so painful! My yard is filled with cacti, but I can guarantee you this one is getting dug up and thrown out tomorrow.

Teddy bear cholla is actually a different species, and I believe had a mild toxin within it's barbs. I believe it has somewhat more spines on it, with inch-long, barbed spines. Teddy bear cholla balls also come off readily, though apparently not as readily as jumping cholla.

Jumping cholla is C. fulgida and Teddy Bear Cholla is C. bigelovii.

The effort it takes to armor hounds in Arizona for them to instinct effectually assist on quail hunting deserves HUGE RESPECT and is otherworldly. Just FYI. You want to see the smartest dogs ever? Desert hounds. Originally American Foxhound, Plott Hound, or Bluetick Coonhounds from the Southeast. Incredible pets and have the fury to read that landscape, WHILE protecting you without being cholla injured, and scaring out prey. Mindblowing.

Pliers I want to say that first. PLIERS

My first encounter with the Leaping Cholla was near Phoenix while hiking. My buddy pointed them out to me and had a lot of nasty stories about what they do, like kill birds. He said, "Even if you barely touch one with the tip of your finger" it will latch on and will very hard to get off." He emphasized, don't even put your finger near one of these things. So I touched one! Of course, I did. But barely with the tippy tip of my finger. It was like a pitbull grabbed a hold of me. First, it was in the tip of my finger, then the back of my hand, then on my forearm. LOL. I used a pocket knife to cut of the main body with my fingers, PRYED, the spines out of me.
FYI. A few moments later my buddy had one in his leg. Yes, he saw what happened to me. He borrowed my comb and set the teeth between the spines and PULLED. I thought the flesh of his calf was going to come off. But he got it out.
Pliers. I recommend pliers.

A tip by a surgeon; use a fine pumice stone to remove the tiny, almost invisible spines found especially in prickly pear, just rub gently until glocids are gone. Works like a charm.
