Tricks for hard IV Sticks

This video is a short demonstration on a few ways we obtain #iv access in patients that are #hardsticks. Many patients are considered hard sticks if they have small veins, or dehydrated. A few tips are to slap the vein a little, or rub it in a gentle motion. I also like to position the arm or hand to hold the vein in a position that prevents it from moving once the iv presses on the skin. Having all of your supplies ready is good too and making sure that you are comfortable.

that looks like a 22 gauge and it takes longer for the blood to come down the lumen of that very small needle than if you are using a larger size needle.

I apply tourniquet over the sleev or gown. Its so much more comfortable for the patient.

Once it’s cleaned with alcohol, you’re not suppose to touch it again right?

Vein finder is the best way to go with these types of hard-sticks..

This is a 22g, not 20g thankfully. As you said, it’s a “super tiny vein”. She’s only getting fluids, 0 need for a 20g needle. Limit vein trauma and get a better vein diameter to catheter gauge ratio, much better for future health of vein.

Can you explain how it works that you think you stuck to far and than pulling back will get the needle in the vein? I have been trying to picture it in my head what happens but i dont really understand how that can help place a catheter. Thx. Great video...dont listen to the haters
