Gaming Historian covered this. The gun is looking for the black screen first, then it is looking for the white hit box.

When you pull the trigger, the game displays a black frame, followed by a frame with a white box over the duck's position. The gun needs to see the black frame before the white box, so you can't cheat by just pointing it at a light source. If there are two ducks, then after the black frame it displays a white box over one of the ducks, then a box over the other duck, so that's how it knows which duck you hit, by seeing which frame it saw the box on.

When I was a kid, I figured out that raising the contrast on the TV...hits the where ever you aim.

It's just a photo sensor. The way old schools screens work is that there is just one dot that runs the entire length and breadth of the screen, very fast. Creating the picture. The photo diode if it sees the dog, registers kill if it doesn't, no kill. White box means you are touching the outside of the area of the duck..

you were aiming the gun at the TV while your phone was infront of it and the information passed your phone and triggered the TV as it would normally as if the phone wasn't there.

That trick used to work on the 1st gen game, the later ones had a white box followed by a black box to stop people doing that light trick
