I figured this out last night while rearranging my freighter base. I wish they'd stop playing with the color palettes, just give us all of the colors.

You don't need to place the object with the desired colors (e.g. locked crate) down. You can select the item (e. g. locked crate), select the desired color, back out of color menu, back out of object placement mode (but don't back out of build mode) and then select the actual item to place, place the item, enjoy your fancy colored item. As Beeblebum said, the colors chosen will be used until you exit build mode (or select a new color), so you can place as many objects as you wish. I re-did my entire freighter this way with a unique colorset for each floor/function. Thanks, Beebs!

This is helpful, thanks. It boggles the mind why they come up with redesigns and updates and then take away colours & choices. Monochrome schemes don't exist anymore and all legacy freighter parts cost 4x as much to build as the new ones. I just want to keep the look of my freighter as it was. The changeover is hideous. Options are great, taking things away is not.

I wonder if we even need to build new rooms for this. Here's my thought. When I change the color of any regular object I can go back to the build menu press C, place the mouse on any other object, press G and the other object will change to the color I had previously chosen without the coloring menu popping up. Maybe this works as well with the new freighter modules. I'm going to try that.

Good to know, thanks. Another thing that bothers me: I acquired a black freighter. Although I paid with a lot of nanites for other color options, NMS will only change the trim color, nothing else. 😒

Having to pick our own colors just like our character/freighter would be nice. Also i wish they added singular wall option to the freighter just like how they have with the window so that way I can make small rooms.

Universal primary colors, secondary colors, and material textures would be incredible to have for all structures in the game! Let's hope they add it in at some point

I did notice the "original" colors were applied to the rooms that remained after the update, like the storage rooms. It disappointed me that I could not copy the color. I'm gonna go rebuild my ship and recolor it.

Nice trick, they should allow any color, e.g. with color picker or putting #hex color

They could have add colour platelet like Warframe (without the microtransaction of course) for both primary and secondary. Don't have to be all 16M colours, duh.

This is good, they have a purple/yellow that I have my entire interior done in. Looks like I need to reset the whole thing and start from step 1. Awesome video!

This glitch works for any part that doesn’t normally have the menu of brighter colors. I have an entire stone-walled building in an array of variously beautiful and eye-searing colors because of it.

You can use this to get unobtainable colours on the Frontiers base parts too. I used it to get some nice red stone walls.

At this point i dont know why they dont just give us a full RGB colour wheel for the primary and secondary colours.

It's really a shame I need to be in Flat-screen mode just to edit the colors. Hello Games took the color editing option out of the PSVR mode...

Bro, I found out about this glitch ages ago.
Also this glitch works on planet buildings as well and you don't need to place the item down first and change it, it works before you place an item as well :)
