Inkscape Video Tutorial 5

In this part of my Inkscape video tutorial I focus on the Inkscape Tiled Clone Tool. I also cover clones and how they work in Inkscape.

I explain what every tiled clone tool does and provide a few examples of the cool things you can create with them. Specifically we'll look at Symmetry, Shift, Scale, Rotation, Blur & Opacity, Color and Trace. We'll make cool patterns, flowers, spirals and so much more.

talking about clone colors you had a child like enthusiastic tone in your voice that I felt expressed your true passion for InkScape. I'm glad I found your tutorials.

Just storing notes here for my later reviewing. Below serve as memory triggers for me, as I am forgetful.

Video: Cloning and Clone tiling
00:33 - Cloning object plus its properties.
00:53 - Clones behaving alike.
01:40 - Cloned Tile. Go to Edit > Clone > Create Tiled Clones
03:03 - Cloned Tile tricks.
05:03 - Butterfly-shapes in tiles.
06:28 - Diamond shapes in tiles.
08:49 - Hexagon shapes in tiles.
11:42 - Squares. Scaling clones in tiles.
12:50 - Triangles. Rotating clones in tiles .
13:50 - Stars. Rotating clones from their shifted centre points.
14:50 - Petal shapes. Rotating clones from centre points.
15:52 - Cloned lines in rotation.
16:56 - Square. Blur and opacity on clones in tiles.
19:25 - Changing colours on tiled clones.
20:28 - Spiral being used like a motion path. Putting stars on a hidden spiral. Colour tweening too.

Great, thanks for the video Derek!

Regarding the example where the star spirals outward and grows, the invisible spiral object in the background does not actually serve much of a purpose. The only thing that matters is that the grouped entity (the star and the spiral together) happened to have a center that is different from the center of the star. This is what causes the "spiraling out" effect as the grouped entity rotates and grows. The same effect could be achieved without grouping the star with an invisible spiral object in the background by simply dragging the center of the star (the little plus sign) away from the star's center before creating the tiled clones.

Could you do C++ tutorials?

You're seriously one of the best teachers on YouTube.

Your videos are excellent!  Thank you so much for posting.  I have been searching for a tutorial on using fonts with Glyphs.  I bought Samantha font and cannot figure out how to use the Glyphs in the font family. Would you do a video on using Glyphs in fonts, please?

Just found this video series and thank you. Also noticed you have videos on other subject I want to learn and if they are as good as these, thanks again in advance.

Derek...    I'm learning GIMP and now Inkscape because of you.  Thank you and thanks for making it easy to follow.   Suggestion ... on some menu items that you click on  (that font, "discuss" or is it "distress" ? you need to zoom in) I dont have it.  Its used on a lesson about wrapping text on a curve (path).  Where do you get it ? Is it as easy to install new fonts (like GIMP is) ??   I've watched your Inkscape Video Tutorials series:   I II III IV and now V  - very nice.     Again, thank you.     FOOT NOTE:    I see you have VI and VII ... oh boy!

Is there a "magic wand" as in P/shop for selecting specific areas?

Thank you very much for making this video. How ever i have a question. when creating tiled clones and scaling the image is there a way of keeping the stoke width constant? I know there is the button on the top that prevents this while scaling on object by itself but it seems not to work while tile cloning.

The "spiral of stars" example in this video confused me, but I think I figured out why...  I think the drawing with the "spiral tool" and the joining of the spiral and the star-shape were unnecessary.  In doing so,   you essentially created a shape with nothing in it except a star that was offset from the center (which causes the spiraling effect when rotated & scaled).  I think the same effect could have been achieved with a simple star with it's "center point" moved off-center.

i'm not sure what the problem is, but whenever I use symmetry it adds spaces between shapes, and when i try set width and hight for my shapes it doesn't give me my exact figures.

Derek, how do you export something from inkscape to where it looks exactly like it did in InkScape?  For example I made a really cool piece using filters to add a metalic look, but when I export it to a png file it looks nothing like I made it in inkScape.

Thank you so much for the tutorials.
In this tutorial 5, I followed your guide and I tried to make a cube by polygon 120 degree . But actually I forgot to put exactly W and H and the result did not look right.
I mean how can you know the rate 90:150 W:H to make a perfect cube?
