I’ve stayed in many hostels and never had a privacy curtain or lockers.

Me who doesn't even go to a hostel:
"Interesting"

Edit:everyone is asking what is a hostel so here is a lil google copy paste.

A hostel is a lower-priced inn of sorts that offers basic, shared accommodations. Typically, a hostel features a large room with separate beds, a shared bathroom, and a communal kitchen. Some hostels have private rooms, but the lower-cost ones generally offer bunk beds.

Edit2: Dad I’m famous

Also if you’re traveling alone and your phone is dying change your voicemail on your phone to give your last known location so that someone can find you and stay put until you can contact help or they contact you. While you’re unable to make phone calls or text messages because of no service you can change your voicemail. You don’t need reception to do that.

Safety isn't grim. The harsh reality is that no place is safe. Good to use your head. Thanks for the tips.

After binge watching Criminal Minds, telling someone where you are seems like a really good idea!

I had a friend who died from food poisoning while bumming around the world. His parents had a long, grim task trying to find his body in an obscure hostel in an Arab nation. Once they found him, there was suspicion that there might have been foul play. He was 18 on a pre-college adventure. So sad. Always let someone know the location where you’re at. So sad. It happens.

I agree with the "lock your belongings" thing.
When I was in hostel I kept losing all my snacks. I thought I had unknowingly finished it because I kept it in my personal trunk.
Turns out it was the hostel staff that kept stealing my stuffs. 🤦‍♀️

It's not grim, it's honest.
I'm a huge true crime listener and that along with having someone that you check in with at least daily can make a huge difference in you coming home.
Unfortunately too many people don't have a safe level of fear in them when they travel.

"I didn't mean to make it sound grim."

You're in a hostel.
I watched the movies "Hostel".
Yeah, no thanks. Lol

Never keep valuables in the locker. I've seen so many people get stuff stollen while they are out. Sleep with anything valuable on you. Just use it for a backpack and replaceables that are bulky. I normally just keep my belongings in my bed tho.

You forgot the most important tip: don't stay in a party hostal, unless you want to party, or you won't get any sleep and be dodging vomit on the way to the showers. But honestly staying in hostals is pretty great. Its probably the easiest way to meet people whilr traveling solo.

No no, own it, it is grim. My dad always wanted to know where I am so he knew where to start looking for a body. Alive or not.

In the mind of a stupid 13 year old just starting to think she is 'adult' enough to leave the house without a care, this really stuck with me all my life and I will be passing it onto my children.

When I had my first hostel experience, I made sure to have a lock.

This was in New York.

And as soon as I walk in, there is a girl who fainted because someone stole all of her belongings. This was a massive teaching lesson to me, and I was so glad I had my lock.

Use a better lock. Those combo locks can be kicked open.

When I used to travel overseas, I always kept my passport in a small pocket I made in my bra. I even kept my credit card there and my cash I had on me.
I always let people know where I was and what I was doing. If I felt uncomfortable I would call someone to talk to them while walking that always deters theft or being taken, because they would have a witness, especially when you are face timing someone. I rarely stayed in hostels, but when I did, I made sure that they were women only ones. To make friends I always shared food and supplies, because some women who stayed in the hostels sometimes would run out of feminine hygiene products or their toothpaste, etc. I always carried extra small travel economy products. Like toothpaste, toothbrushes, deodorant, hairspray, shampoo and conditioner, etc.
I would even let the owners know where, when and what time I would be back if I got a phone call or mail, or if I stayed at a resort I would let the managers know these things. Now that I have traveled in my younger years, I don’t have to travel so much because I have experienced what most people should do when they are younger. So I don’t need to travel because I have seen and did so much. I’m just enjoying the treatment of being retired from working.

I'm planning on traveling around Japan for my gap year when I'm 19! So the last tip is SUPER helpful. I will message my parents my location everytime I move accommodation or go to a place. I probably will travel with one other friend, but just in case, that's helpful.

Telling someone where you're at is GREAT advice. I still do this.
