The question I get very often is how someone can find the perfect mentor in life. In this video, I walk you through some key things to look out for, what made Ryan Holiday such a great mentee, and what makes for a bad mentee. Let me know your thoughts in the comments.

Robert Greene is the author of the New York Times bestsellers The 48 Laws of Power, The Art of Seduction, The 33 Strategies of War, The 50th Law, Mastery, The Laws of Human Nature, and most recently, The Daily Laws.

3 things that made Ryan Holiday an exemplary mentee.

1. His primary aim was to develop skills. Not fame, not money, not reputation. Skills were the primary goal. Everything else was secondary.
2. He took his 20’s very seriously. It’s never too late but getting ahead in your 20’s sets a solid foundation for life.
3. Ryan dropped his ego. He didn’t take criticism personally and simply got the job done.

The tricky part is finding someone you admire and then making yourself useful to them in order to get your foot in the door. Observe them and what they struggle with or where they could expand themselves through you. Offer your help in a specific way, not a vague way, and then take initiative to show them you're serious. Never ever approach someone empty handed, and the more specific you can be, the better. No master wants to feel like they have to constantly supervise their apprentice or that it's their job to think of things to keep you busy with. The whole point is that you can save them time. And the better you know their work, the more indispensable you will be to them.

Great video! I thank myself for never giving up even when it was very hard I kept pushing through until I made it out. My advice is that If you do your own investing, have you ever thought whether you should turn things over to a financial advisor? If you have significant assets, you have probably felt anxiety when making choices with your money. Perhaps you sensed that you might make better investing decisions if you knew just a little more and could invest without emotion. If this is the case, consulting a financial advisor makes perfect sense.

Your book *Mastery* is in itself an enriching experience and the equivalent of having a personal coach, thank you.

I'm 53. Looking back at my 20's and 30's, I wasted an enormous amount of time - and undervalued many opportunities - by allowing my ego to get in my way. It's easy to spend youthful energy on shoring up the fiction we create about ourselves. That energy is better spent learning and connecting with talented people. To do that, you have to have the courage to face your weaknesses - to take the risk of your ego being hurt. You can learn this early by choice - or life will eventually humble you into understanding it. Robert gives some outstanding advice here.

Thank you so much for this invaluable information Robert. I'm 35 and have been a go getter my whole life . I had success through lots of failure.

This past month I put my neck out and asked for mentorship. For the first time in my life I felt truly vulnerable and willing to be too....
The mentor I am involving myself with has truly valuable knowledge in my new field and I have a huge opportunity to grow myself and our company to new heights.

So I drop my ego, I listen and I don't talk over him and in return it seems, he will teach me the ways....

We keep a guard up and in return, the other people do too. Be vulnerable and you may be surprised when the opposer let's his down too.

Love listening to your knowledge and wisdom Robert. Thank you.

Great to see the joy in your voice as you talk of Ryan. It demonstrates a different kind of value the protege can bring, beyond just doing the grunt work for the master.

Robert, you are a mentor to many who you won't ever know or get a thank you for personally, but like myself are enormously grateful for all of your wisdom and guidance. You have changed my brain for the better. I have read 4 of your books and I can't even begin to tell you what a difference you've made. I am a different person because of you, I am following my dreams for the first time in my life.

I did my ten year apprenticeship for my craft with God. It was brilliant for he is the Master Creator.

One of the most shocking things I have found in my late thirties, I only have learned this in the last few years is no one is actually looking out for you. I thought if I worked at a good company, which I do and worked hard I would be approached for more leadership type positions. It never happened. The lesson being no one is looking out for you, was hammered home when my wife and a college friend of mine went from being teachers to principals around the same time and I asked each one of them, "what made you decided to get the additional schooling that is required to become an adminstrator?" They both said roughly the same thing, "I decided that is what I wanted to do."

If school systems don't have an established mentor system where they try to identify talented teachers or people who could be great leaders then business certainly won't.

This video is so useful. The way Robert explained was so soothing to hear and makes a lot of sense to me. He explained it like he was talking to his own kids or students. Robert is so right about the emotional connection between the mentor and the mentee. It is like the key ingredient for things to keep flowing for the however long time they are together. Respect to you!
