How to crimp your own Dupont wires and connectors

This is a quick video about how I create my Dupont-wires using this special crimping tool. It's very easy, once you know how.
Being able to crimp your own Dupont cables and connectors is very convenient when you use a Raspberry Pi and all kinds of accessories.

One of the fundamental purpose of crimping is that keeping insulator intact with connectors. To attain this, you have to crimp the insulator part too. That's why connectors definitely have separated sections for the insulator and wire.

I was always taught not to twist the stranded wire when crimping. I think the reason is because if the strands are twisted together, the crimp is more likely to crush (or worse, cutting) the strands, which is bad.

Bedankt Bas, zonder gebruisaanwijzing lukt het niet, maar met jouw instructie wèl. Stukje koperen kern is heel kort.

Thanks for the video. Glad that what I thought was a slow process is actually normal. The tip about pulling the terminal to the notch was great. I too have crushed a few crimps and had to set the tension setting to one stop above the minimum.

thank you!
Youre the one person whose said the most important part i was not getting correct: to push the bit into the pliers until it hits and stops in the middle. I tried this and finally i can crimp without the bits turning into crushed bent bits of metal :-)

Your video was done with good verbal detail and great consideration of the importance of close-up views in sharp focus. Though I bought them, I had not used these plyers previously, but with your suggestion of pre-mounting the contact in the plyer before inserting the wire, I will give it another go!
Thanks.

I saw the thumbnail for your video and saw that the crimper looks the same as the one I just bought. So I just watched your video before any of the others and I'm glad I found a decent tutorial. I don't have the crimper yet, but I feel completely comfortable with using the new tool. I should have my new crimper in a couple days. Thanks!! (P.S. I don't understand the thumbs ratio. Your video is way under rated for some reason).

When buying pins - What is meant by "B-WIND - Right Payoff" and/or "D-WIND - Left Payoff" ?

If you fill the rear "wings" crimp band with the insulation, you minimize the tendency to over crimp, which is what distorts it enough to prevent insertion. The insulation is actually supposed to just butt against the crimp band that holds the wire, or fall a hair thickness short of touching. That plier has FAR too much mechanical advantage, and that ratchet takes from ability to feel the crimp forming, both conspire to crush rather than crimp. The proper depth of insulation will counter that a bit, acting as a soft "stop", allowing enough height to remain. Though inexpensive, that is really the worst crimper for the job, that is more intended for spade, rings, bullets, etc, those utility class connectors, not delicate precision ones like duponts

Hi, thank you very much for the video it is very helpful.
Where can I get those kind of connectors, dupont connectors?

Realy nice video, but aren't the pointy bend things (sorry, don't know the name) supposed to go around the isulation instead of the bare wires?

I chipped my front tooth once stripping wires. had it fixed the next morning but every time I strip with my teeth now I always avoid the very front tooth.

You can try TDOK SN-28B crimping tool, Cheap price but high quality on amazon. Waiting for more video.

one of the fundamental purpose of crimping is you don't need to solder so it sort of defeats the object soldering the wire then

Hallo Bas,

Ik heb zelf ook al die spulletjes gekocht.
Tang, mannetjes, vrouwtjes, hulsjes enz…

Rotterdam!
Rob.

I also strip wires of insulation with my front teeth. It's the best stripper and always at hand.

He doesn’t understand the crimping tool. The wings are crimped to the insulation. The secondary, smaller, tabs connect to the conductor.
