I’m watching every single dollar. Yesterday I canned up 14 litres, or quarts of veggie stock from veg bits that I saved in my freezer. Free stock. Tomorrow I am canning 14 pints of pinto beans and chick peas. Less than half the cost of a can from the store. I was very intentional when I bought my seeds this year because I want to grow what I love, and what is expensive in the store and preserve it. ☮️💟

Coup of the century! My family hates butternut squash and I have a ton of them from my mom’s garden. I pureed them. Today, I blended an almost overripe avocado, a browning banana, 2 cups squash pureed, a bit of sugar, a bunch of cocoa powder, and chia seeds to make a pudding—added a little yogurt on top dusted with cocoa powder. They thought I made a decadent dessert, but it was all stuff that was getting close to going into the compost pile. And they ate squash without knowing

My community is for sure is my church family, Always taking care of one anothers' needs. Couldn't imagine life without it!

Love the community—having a church is wonderful. When one of us is down, everyone pitches in to lift them up—this was the whole point. We look out for the widows and children on the street…and each other of course. I’m saving money by tapping our maples and boiling over a fire with wood found on the ground. Our neighbors let us have the apples from two of their scraggly trees—we’re still eating apple butter and making crisps from the stuff I froze—35 gallons.

I use coconut oil as deodorant in the winter. Works perfectly.

I amping up my garden this year and ways of preserving food. A relative gifted me their old dehydrator and I have a water bath canner. I am decluttering so we have space for food storage.
I'm continuing to cook from scratch and looking to Pinterest and other places for copycat recipes. My teen likes fast food so I'm recreating recipes.
I am also not buying any new clothing this year. I may end up buying shoes for my teen but thankfully she is almost my size so I have given her free reign to "shop" from my stuff. I work from home so I don't need to have a lot of items to wear anymore.

Saving money with a single income in the most expensive state often means (when possible) preventive care or maintenance of appliances, cars, home. Since our cars are all used and find buying a used car means someone purchased it new ran it into the ground then at 110-120k miles trades it in or dumps it before real Maintenace begins. Regularly I check or inspect car, pull out dipstick, eyeball fluids, put cardboard under for leaks, check door seals, lights etc. As well as buy my own air/oil filters and give to shop to install. Appliances always buy new, had two bad fridges, washer and dryer used. all died within 1 year with compressor, belts etc. Monthly use the washer cleaner and inspect drum, listen during wash, clean dryer with dryer brushes down deep. inspect drum, listen during wash, clean dryer with dryer brushes down deep. Saving money when a problem occurs is one thing but taking care of what you do own is another. We live in a use it up, don't care about it then throw it away society. + a brand-new nice car (Kia Carnival) price tag is now $50k and up, appliance prices especially ones that use aluminum/metal like fridge/washer will be going way up$$! Take inventory of what you have, get rid of things that no longer serve you and plan to get things in advance.

You Can get free seed packets on earth day at HEB maybe check with the library and see who else gives seeds or volunteer with a community and learn how to raise a garden.

People don’t utilize their local library nearly as much as they should. Free WiFi, computers. Some have a seed library. Great kids programs. Printing. Notarizing. Movies. So much !

I use apple cider vinegar for a hair rinse. I have stopped using shampoo. It took a couple weeks for my hair to detox the chemicals that were in it, and it was slightly oily. But now, it is perfectly fine. I am using my old shampoo for laundry detergent until it is gone. I will not be buying anymore of these products and you are absolutely correct, the only things we need are vinegar, coconut oil, baking soda and the soap. Going forward these will be the only ones that I purchase.

I quit using conditioner and my hair is so much better now. At night I brush my teeth with only water. I also started using only two tablespoons of laundry soap per load and wash with cold water. If you have any expensive fragranced body lotions just mix in a tiny bit with a cheaper lotion to make it stretch. Wash and reuse big ziplock bags. Save bread bags and other similar bags for scooping cat litter. I find soups are a good way to make a big cheap meal for a family and I make homemade breadsticks with mine using my pizza dough recipe.

Thanks so much for sharing these ideas. We are trying to secure healthy food, last week we just finished building a chicken coop. We are supposed to pickup our pullets at the end of March. I wish we had completed this project six months ago but at least we are this far along.

I use my Royal Bank Visa for everything and pay it off at the end of the month. I accumulate a ton of rewards points and every month I redeem my points for grocery gift cards, gas cards etc.. it really helps keep our grocery and gas bill on budget! Have a safe flight Katie, much love from 🇨🇦
