A marriage is more than just a ceremony of love, it protects our spouse in the case of illness and death. A spouse usually is not denied health insurance covered by the other spouse (it’s why I can be a stay at home parent), a spouse usually won’t lose their house if one spouse dies, a spouse usually won’t lose custody of children if the other spouse dies. I got married more so to protect myself and my children in case my husband died. Yes, I love him but does love protect you from losing everything if your spouse dies or becomes seriously ill ? Laws do not protect a girlfriend/boyfriend, the laws only protect a spouse. Everyone should have that protection.

The sad thing we're seeing here is that even settled law is never really settled. Your rights exist only so long as you can keep some bigoted, power-tripping creep from taking them away. Never take anything for granted. Never tell yourself that it can't happen here and now. Always be engaged: turn out, volunteer, protest, donate, vote. Learn about the law, and how the courts and government work. Be prepared, informed, and vigilant. Or what was "settled" will become unsettled with frightening speed.

It would seem that there would be at least 10 republiCON Senators that would have family or friends that are in the LGBTQ community and would be able to see that this is not a culture war issue. This is a human rights issue. You can't guarantee the right to a civil union to only a certain group of people.
