Solid nitrogen is the solid form of the element nitrogen. It is an important component of the surfaces of Pluto and outer moons of the Solar System such as Neptune's Triton.
How do you produce solid nitrogen? You start with putting liquid nitrogen (-196°C) in a vacuum chamber. As you lower the pressure in the chamber, it decreases the boiling point of the liquid nitrogen which means the nitrogen boils faster. However: the boiling liquid nitrogen is also evaporating which cools itself. In the video it stops to boil and at that moment the surface of the liquid starts to freeze. At this time the nitrogen has a temperature of -210°C.
As a pressure builds up below the frozen nitrogen surface the nitrogen „explodes“ occasionally.
The frozen nitrogen is porous, almost like snow.
