Prior to their April 2014 Symphony Hall concert, conductor Hugh Wolff and principal musicians from New England Conservatory's Philharmonia gathered to discuss the historical events behind Dmitri Shostakovich's monumental "Symphony No.11, The Year 1905." Included in this video are music excerpts from the concert.

Thanks for posting! My grandfather was a Lithuanian communist revolutionary who was involved in 1905, so this symphony has always had special meaning. Sorry I missed the chance to see you play it live!

I first heard this piece (1st movement) on the "Cosmos" soundtrack in the 70's. If I recall, Carl Sagan walked around planets to the symphony's first three minutes. Thanks for the actual, historical background.

When Shostakovich wrote the Symphony the USSR crushed the Hungarian revolution en thus telling the people of the USSR and the rest of the world that nothing has changed and people are still killing each other.A grimm message!
