Microsofts biggest problem was getting high budget AAA titles from in house so they bought companies that can fix that: Bethesda, Activision and all the other internal studios.
Sony's biggest problem (currently) is getting their titles to as many gamers as possible and making multiplayer games that could sell people on PS Plus so they bought companies that can fix that: Nixxes, Bungie, etc.

Let's look at the positives... Both publishers bought companies that were to fill in the cracks they legitimately had.

Sony definitely bought bungie just so they have a studio that makes good multiplayer fps games. They are preparing for when Microsoft makes call of duty exclusive to Xbox

In the next few years, "indie developer" will mean "not owned by Sony, Nintendo or Microsoft." Sucks man.

They bought bungie about 20 years too late

It kinda seems like Sony and Microsoft will eventually become game services and compete that way. Maybe that's why Sony has a PC team now? Not sure l like where this is going.

I don't see the point if they're going to remain independent and release games on multiple platforms. I guess we'll just have to wait and see what sony's plans are. This can't be it.

So basically Sony “bought” Bungie so nobody else could.

might be interesting if a Bungie team takes over Killzone or Resistance

Anyone else just not impressed? Nice for Sony but Bungie today is not the same company from the 2000’s. They were a legendary developer at one point and after reach they became mid.

As a person who gets both consoles every generation this is fun to watch. It’s like war but peaceful 😂

The differences between this and the 16-Bit war between Nintendo and Sega was that Nintendo and Sega actually make good games to top one another, they didn't go all out to buy IPs from other publishers and make them exclusives. Even if the Super NES had an Aladdin game, Genesis had an Aladdin game too and both are different game and had their own charms and appeal. On top of the unique third party lineup, they also had great first and second party titles on both systems as well. We don't see this kind of competition in this modern day gaming war. They don't buy their way to the top, they are fighting to get to the top.

These companies are securing their power position in the industry for the next 10 and 20 plus years. They are playing the long game with these acquisitions.

I think Sony and Microsoft are kind of working together, buying all these companies, so that Apple or Tesla doesn't get into the gaming industry.

Bungie clearly don’t know what they want. Went from Microsoft to activision to Sony now. Like a lost puppy. Hopefully they actually have a good relationship with this one.

Oh they trying to fight back but Bungie is hardly a big thing with how dead their games currently are. A sad sight i hope this means they'll be able to do better. I miss the Bungie of old.

Sony tried to do their earth-shattering acquisition like Microsoft but fell flat. Bungie isn’t going to sacrifice whatever staff they have for *anything* else other than Destiny 2. They’ve completely cornered the looter-shooter market with D2 and its micro-transaction shop rakes in millions, so the incentive to cut staff off D2 for something else is less than zero. Not to mention that they’re staying independent and cross platform. All this means is most likely more D2 PlayStation exclusives. I don’t think there’s going to be any “fallout” from this OR the Microsoft Activision/Blizzard buyout.

They’ll keep bungie games multi platform but free on the new PS game streaming service and they won’t allow them on Xbox game pass. They prolly are looking to give people a reason to subscribe to their service

Sony: I'll do you a solid trade Microsoft, you give us COD and we'll give you destiny 2.
Microsoft: No
