HOW TO: 2006 5.9 Cummins alternator replacement

Changing the alternator in my 06 dodge with a 5.9. Proceeds is similar on all 5.9s

Loved the Vise Grip tip! I used a breaker bar (didn’t have a long ratchet + cheater) - for anyone planning this, the 1/2” socket is oriented 45° like a diamond.

Great video. My 07 5.9 is charging 14-18 volts and cooking the batteries. I’m hoping it’s the alternator and not the ecm. I already replaced all the cables.

'Preciate the video. I am getting psyched up to do my 2003 3500 Ram dually (Not a confident self taught mech")
with almost 300, 000 miles and I'm doing mine for what I believe is the 1st time? (Bought at 167, 000 miles.)
Would have been perfect if you could have had everything lit up real good. Especially where that 1/2 inch drive
goes in. But, I think your video will help me get it done if I can find the spot for the 1/2 drive on the tensioner.
Great tip about the vice grip. Love great cheats, (Best one yet was a way to pry front wheel bearing hubs off,
using the power steering against a socket w/extension).

I believe your 2500 set up looks exactly like mine....dual batteries (which were draining down...read that bad
diodes can cause that) Since, I believe it's the original alternator, I wanted to get it rebuilt or just get a new
one anyway. Rebuild place said they could not get parts for it. I'll put a post change report. Thxs again for
the video. If my batteries are still draining after that, I guess I will be pulling all the fuses and checking the
voltmeter. Really hoping I don't have to do that!

How did you remove the alternator. I was able to get the bolts off and the cable but can’t actually remove the alternator. I feel there’s not enough room to wiggle it out.
