I taught my first class as an adjunct sculpture professor this semester (and my twelfth year as a high school art teacher), and one of the fundamental things that I tried to instill into my students was that before they ever picked up a tool in the woodshop, they were makers. What they did in sculpture class was a new facet to their making, a new tool in their toolbox in how to think of making. They got to work in ways they had never thought of before (most students were Illustration, graphic design, or art education students), and I would like to think that their experiences in "building" have heightened their senses of value as makers. Also, I introduced them all to Tested by having them create cardboard replicas of everyday objects ala the Inventern.
