In this very short video I explain when you should or should not use Sub-Channels, Security Codes, radio encryption tones, CTSSS, DPL, DCS. I explain what these codes, tones and sub-channels are, I explain if they provide encryption on a GMRS or ham radio - and as an added bonus I explain when you should use subchannels, security codes, etc, and when you must use them.

Your videos are very informative but your so dead set that you don't waist time and get right to the point that you waist minutes every video telling us how to the point you are kinda funny but definitely not straight to the point

Another benefit of using tones on my repeater is it’s allowed me to lower my squelch setting. Proves helpful enabling more distant users access to it.

Randy, I Have to say the Baofeng UP-69 is remarkable! Especially the new FCC approved encryption for channels 22-30.
Thank you for another outstanding video!

Per Randy's recommendations, I too have gotten the Baofeng UP-69. I've got to say, my favorite feature of the handset is the "rolling encryption" feature, enabled of course only on channels 23-30 per the new FCC guidelines. The BLoS capabilities are, to be honest, bonus compared to that.

I came for the spurious emissions and stayed for the comments regarding the new Baofang UP-69 with encryption.

I was hoping you would talk about the new Baofeng UP-69 with the new real encription and expanded GMRS channels. I pre-ordered mine from Alibaba today.

I just got my Baofeng UP-69 in the snail mail late last evening and the FCC came through with my personal encryption / privacy tone for the brand new GMRS channels 23 thru 30. Man, me and my friends in Maine are loving the new channels and tones!

We have found it necessary to use CTCSS tones when out with my Jeep group. You have people using different radios from different manufacturers, of course, with differing build quality. It’s been found with the newer JL and JTs, and all their fancy electronics, that the Jeeps themselves seem to be emitting something that’s causing some radios to break the squelch, and the user is listening to static all of the time. Noticed especially with the Retevis radios. Once a CTCSS tone is added, this stops. The radio sits quietly, until someone actually keys-up and talks.

The "cone of silence" reference in the video thumbnail/preview image was a nice touch, and brought back some really great memories of the show, the technology, and the overall humor with some "so called security". :) _John_

People that think they know everything are particularly aggravating to those of us that do.
Keep up the good work and humor.

Thank you! The exact answer I was looking for. I discovered this on my own and was wondering why my DCS/CT transmissions could be heard on a radio not setup with the same codes.

Hey thank you for putting these videos together. You're maybe not the "Elmer" people want but you are certainly the one they need! Your video was short and concise! I could spend way more than 7min digging through my HORRIBLE Baofeng instruction manual and come away with less knowledge.

Thank you for your input and most of all for your honesty. It's very easy for people to make the mistake of thinking that radio communications are secure when they really aren't. Gracias por su aporte y sobre todo, por su honestidad. Es muy fácil que las personas cometan el error de pensar que las comunicaciones por radio son seguras cuando en realidad no lo son

My new Baofeng UP-69 has the new privacy feature that the FCC just recently approved. It has LIMITED new GMRS channels 23-30. It's great that they would give us pleabs such cool features.
