Is It OK Bad to PARK Vehicle on Hill (Parking Steep Incline Damage Car Automatic Transmission Pawl)

I've read some articles that say you can prevent damage to your transmission if you first put on your emergency brakes, then put into park. Just make sure you release the emergency brake before driving. Also it's smart to turn your wheels so if the brakes fail the car will roll into the curb and not down the hill. I'll put my source in the description for this.

Will parking my car, van, suv, or truck damage the pawl and gear on my transmission or is it bad for my automobile.

Why do Americans not understand the concept of parking brakes. It's very simple, on a hill, move the shifter to N, keep your foot on the brake and apply the parking brake or hand brake whatever you want to call it. Take your foot off the brake and let the car settle on the parking brake then press the foot brake again and move the shifter to park. Now the weight of the car is fully on the parking brake and there is no wear at all on your transmission. In the extremely unlikely event that the parking brake fails, then the parking pawl will take over and keep your car stationary. If you ever feel a clunk when shifting from park to another gear whilst on a hill, you've parked wrong. It should move smoothly.

If it's a really steep hill, then shift to N, apply the handbrake, and release the foot brake. Make sure that the handbrake alone can support the vehicle, then shift to P.
This way the vehicle is resting on the handbrake rather than the parking pawl.
However, it's worth mentioning that generally the parking pawl is very strong. Your tyres will lose traction and skid before damage is done to the transmission.
Think about it this way - The transmission is strong enough to pull a wheeel-spin from a stand still without damage. That's much more traumatic than resting the car on the transmission for sure.

My 2014 Jetta parking is not working. It rolls down hill when in parking gear. I have to use the handbrake. Just got the car too.

Parking on an incline has nothing to do with the transmission’s ability to shift through the gears.

Not if you put the parking brake on before you let go of the foot pedal.
Edit: I see you commented about that below.

The parking pawl locks the transmission. It is plenty strong enough to hold a car on a hill.

The reason you don't want all the weight on the parking pawl is because you have to overexert the cable, stretching it, when you move out of park. But that's the only damage, the transmission should be fine there's hardly any stress on the transmission by holding the car on a hill, it's just the cable stretching and eventually not being able to release the pawl at all once the cable gets stretched enough.

Your system is much better than putting the car into park, lifting your foot off the brake, and then engaging the parking brake.

However, an even better method is as follows: come to a stop with your foot on the brake, shift the transmission into neutral, engage the parking brake, take your foot off the brake until the entire weight of the car is being held by the emergency brake aka the parking brake, then shift into park.

Your method results in part of the weight being on the parking brake and part of the weight being on the parking pawl, which again is much better than all of the weight being on the parking pawl.

But my method means none of the weight is on the parking pawl and so the cable is never stretched trying to get out of park by releasing the parking pawl under stress.

Is this applicable to manual transmission? If not, what measures should be taking when parking a manual transmission car? Thank you. Very helpful!

I haven’t heard of anything bad about parking the front of your car on a decline. I wonder why that isn’t an alternative for people.

I was just looking for this! My garage its on a hill and I own a truck so it weights. I’ve parking like that for a couple weeks (park on a hill). Recently I started to think about it (if it harms the transmission) and here I am.
Are wheel stoppers a soluttion for this?
Thanks for the video man

You are driving a vehicle that has an automatic transmission. Where You park on a hill you should?
Answer A-Set the parking brake, and shift the transmission into neutral.
B-Set the parking brake first, before you shift transmission into park.
C-Shift the transmission into park, and leave the parking brake.
Can someone help me and tell me the right answer please
