this actually happened to me while giving a discussion in Bolivia about 3 months into my mission. during the charla my Spanish was perfect. after the discussion, I went back to my struggling Spanish. it was one of the most amazing things I've ever experienced.

So true. 😂 And for this reason those 12-week MTC missionaries can just settle down with their harder languages. For most languages you can get the grammar and a huge vocabulary down ages before any of what you hear sounds like what you’ve been studying.
