I do also believe that one should state what they exactly mean when they use the term “ minimalism “ but I think they mostly mean minimalism in the context of doing powerlifting to get bodybuilding results. In the last years as powerlifting has become immensely popular, a lot of big names are claiming that you can maximize bicep size with rows and pullups, your triceps size with bench press. Anyone who has dabbled in both powerlifting and bodybuilding will know this simply not the case. But I definitely think their message can be easily misunderstood by some newbies who haven’t even laid a basic strength foundation and muscle coordination yet

Solid take. You’re spot on about context and goals of the individual. This where goals/philosophies come into play, which can help you decide which training style is best for ya.

For the bros that want to get big and strong but don’t care as much about maximizing, there are some pros to minimalism for sure.

For the bros that are looking to truly maximize results, I don’t think minimalism will get you the results you’re looking for, and that will leave you with an empty feeling. Again that’s not everyone, but for people like myself I’d warn against minimalism.

Felt obligated to say this just from the comment sections. Context is always important, and even if one route is slightly better than another, it doesn't necessarily make the other one bad. Goal dependent of course.

Totally agree. I've seen many jacked individuals who don't know how to do it a wrist curl or a chest flye and have never heard of the 3-count pause close-grip Larsen press.

I'm more of a maximalist myself, but that's largely a cope because max strength on the major compound lifts have been extremely difficult for me to progress on. Meanwhile adding volume, increasing density, incorporating variations and isolations has meant that I could continue to progress in meaningful ways besides 2.5kg increments every few weeks on the big four.

I feel slighted after not receiving at least 8 seconds of pec dancing.

Those numbers are elite and insane.

The question is what's better for a man who can bench 80kg, squat 120kg, deadlift 160kg?

Keep grinding with the big 3 or do bodybuilding?

I don't care that much about getting my numbers up beyond that, I'd like a 100kg bench though.

Would I'd be better doing the big 3 or isolations for a bigger body?

Naturally you know that big compound movements aren’t all that is RECOMMENDED to get jacked as well, including movements that help train the boys from a health and longevity perspective is important if you want to be able to milk all you can from those compounds, which is why including hammer curls, rope pushdowns, face pulls, swapping pull-up grips, leg curl variations, even calf training, they all help keep yourself in one piece as you get jacked and strong.

Perfectly balanced as all things should be. But seriously, this is a solid take and should be pointed out.

100% agree that context matters, one of my favorite quotes from you is that “training works”. Attacking basic exercises and progressing on them is surely going to get someone jacked.

Definitely going to spend some time thinking about this more. Thanks man.

Well i mean Basement Bodybuilding did exactly that, got strong on compound movements, yet he was significantly smaller than someone like me who has pathetic strength on compound lifts. His physique has improved a lot since then, seemingly because he got away from training in a minimalistic fashion. It is definitely true that some people can get huge just off minimalistic training, but it's far from optimal for most people if you care about being as big and aesthetic as possible in my opinion.

This is an excellent take. I think as the natural lifting community grows we can become a bit dogmatic in some views. The guys posting videos are all passionate advanced lifters and sometimes I think they forget that 80%+ of the viewers are either novices or don’t share the exact same goals. Sometimes the conversation can get a bit out there. It’s always nice to have someone counter the sway of idea to stop a dogmatic influence. Not to say they’re wrong but life isn’t black and white. Same with lifting. Great video

I definitely agree

The first 2 guys (idk anything about Stand) had underdeveloped arms and other small muscles and benefited a lot from a lot of variation so that’s where they come from on there

Here's my simple take on the issue: The only muscles that grow are the ones you train. Some people have misconceptions / are deceived about what muscles are worked by certain movements. Laziness is always a problem (for size OR strength). One movement WILL grow A muscle if done HARD enough, progressively, over time. Some movements conflict with each other recovery wise. Plan accordingly!

Great video D, I agree with the take home message for sure. Solutions to problems begin by recognizing what your goals are.

Cheers :)

I agree, you can get decent results with minimalism, for me minimalism is something like this:
Push:a horizontal press
A vertical press
A triceps exercise
Pull:
A row
A pull down/pull up
Biceps exercise
Legs:
Squat variation
Deadlift variation.

I train like that and it works for me, If you can make progress you'll gain muscle, I noticed some people call minimalism do just doing the powerlifting big 3 and that's it, well In my opinion you won't get decent results doing only deadlifts, squats and bench

Why is nobody question Basement Bodybuilding and the numbers he claimed when he was "small". Go watch his video again, he was reading those numbers off a script. What meathead doesn't know their PRs? Why does he have video of his physique from then but not of his big lifts?

Depends on the person's goals. I guess most people will be happy with a decent physique, some muscle and abs. Considering the modern busy lifestyle, minimalism will 100% work for them.

But for those whose life depends on how they look, bodybuilders and youtubers, they have to maximise their training.

Sure it can get me jacked, but can it get me vengeance?
