What you do not understand is that Sally Hemings and Thomas Jefferson were lovers who engaged in a relationship at Monticello, and Sally Hemings was a cleverly assertive woman, who made sure that she and her children would not live as other enslaved Africans. That’s why they were emancipated at 21 with vocational skills that they learned for their survival.

I thought that the agreement between Jefferson and Sally was that any children that they would have would be freed (not just allowed to run away).

Why is it interesting that an enslaved person is able to leave slavery and cannot return to slavery. Slavery is Slavery whether it’s Thomas Jefferson slave or not!
