Filming

Hi, I am the son of two artists and began painting in my hometown of Richmond, Virginia before I could walk. I was a rare combination of artist and athlete so I moved to Los Angeles in 2008 to play football for USC. I left the team my sophomore year to focus on painting and filmmaking, applying the same focus and discipline from my football career to my art. I primarily work in oils, and spend most free days painting "en plein air" in my new home of Sarasota Florida.

I was totally intimidated by oil painting until I found this channel. Now I'm painting and learning more every day. This channel is a gift to us all! Thank you so much for all you do!

This is one of the best channels I've watched since the start of the pandemic. Even though I started digital painting about a year ago, I've progressed well with your tips. I tried to incorporate the traditional method at any way I could into the digital platform. Like one layer, painting over mistakes and using few brushes. I recently did a self portrait and posted a sped up timelapse on my channel I think it came out great. I plan to get into actual traditional painting next year.

1- composition 2- see abstract light and dark shape 3-see isolate the color to match, value no pure white4- see the big thing first, blocking big shape, big average color, 5- see things compare the value all the measurement, well train eye by practice, 7 steps back see your painting, upside down, correct angles, 8 educate your eye more, the form of a human.

Great advice I was taught…

Paint what you SEE, not what you KNOW

Composition is something I’m really trying to focus on this year. Whenever I put work into the composition the painting always turns out way better. Great tips man. Have you ever read the book drawing in the right side of the brain? That book REALLY changed my ability to “see” like an artist, really cool book.

Great Chris! 🖼 Love your Patreon lessons. Such a good investment of time and a little cash I would spend on one visit to Starbucks. Learning lots because I desperately want to use my little brushes and get into the details. But you are making me a better painter with my daily 5x7 big brush practice canvases. ❤️

Value is something I really struggle with. I got a value scale to help me judge how light and dark things are. I am also told that for plein aire a sheet of red transparency will nullify color and make values more apparent. Now if I could just figure out trees, I'd be in business...

question: at 1:34, when you showed the apples with only a few values, is there a filter you are using on procreate or canvas or what to get that? I tried to figure out today how to do that for a portrait and I couldn't figure it out... what are you using THANKS. Great//helpful video!

Hey if your waiting for some inspiration for that blank spot in the Nickolas Cage portrait, might I suggest just the top half of his face from somewhere... Like he's peaking over the others? It's probably too silly for the painting, I thought I'd just throw out the suggestion though.... 8) Good video btw, very informative like always.

Painted a portrait of my dog yesterday, turned out really well I think! Obviously I see things I’d do different next time but I’m still so pleased with how it came out. I have such a hard time stepping back (I also sit down while painting) because I am nearly blind in my left eye so I just can’t see from that far away. I’ll think my brush is where I need it but when I look closely it’s almost an inch off haha do you find it helpful to use the stick thing to help steady the hand? I was thinking of making one
