King of the Hill's Alternate Ending EXPLAINED

Did you know that To Sirloin with Love wasn’t actually King of the Hill's first attempt at a Series Finale? Back in season 11 it appeared as though the show was going to be cancelled by Fox, and so when the production team realized this they decided that the episode “Lucky’s Wedding Suit” would make a fitting series finale. BUT, what I didn’t realize until recently is that an entire additional sequence was animated for this potential series finale, and then scrapped when the show was renewed at the last minute. Recently series writer and producer Jim Dauterive actually posted this original series finale IN ITS ENTIRETY on facebook, and let me tell ya, it is absolutely fascinating and even includes a reveal that the entire show takes place over one single year? So today I wanna dive deep into what they originally wrote into the King of the Hill series finale.

Damn Johnny made enough King of the Hill videos to unlock the secret ending.

Man, Luanna went from dating Buckley, Buckley dying, dating Rad, Zack, Rhett, and Trip, and getting knocked up by Lucky and subsequently married in one year?! Wild!

The fact that the episode where bill stole a tank isn’t cannon makes me a bit sad because it’s such a great episode and it proves how much confidence Bill can still possess when properly motivated, Hank born in New York is a bit odd I’ll give you that.

The tank episode is still canon. Hank was trying to get Bill to not talk about it as imagine the trouble they'd get in if the authorities ever caught wind of it. Hank was born in New York but he's trying to disavow it.

I think that “To Sirloin With Love” was a more satisfying ending because Bobby and Hank finally had something to bond over and I kind of like how it felt like just another day even though the show was ending. It had the right amount of emotion.

I think To Sirloin with Love is a better ending. It shows Hank and Bobby really connecting over something, doesn't destroy continuity, and adds some nice tidbits like Boomhauer being a Texas Ranger.

I remember talking to Jim Dauterive at one of the Comic-Cons and he was the guy who told me about the talks for King of the Hill to come back in 2017. He said the problem was all the contracts all the other people on the team needed to complete before it could happen. Now we’re getting the revival and still so psyched. Real cool guy.

We kind of knew that the series took place over one year (despite multiple holidays and MANY football seasons) because Bobby is in 8th grade and never moves on to high school. I actually really like the de-canonizing stuff. You could say that the timeline breaking stuff was also non-canon.

I think it's kinda wild that this implies internally some episodes are just non-canon. That being said I think it'd just be funnier if those two episodes actually happened and Hank's insistence that Bill never stole the tank was for legal reasons. Also that he was still born in New York and is just gaslight gatekeep grillbossing people into thinking he wasn't.

I've always wondered "Why does Lucky's wedding suit feel like a series finale?" When I found out about this sequence it was quite mind boggling honestly

Bill stealing a tank was one the major eps for Bill I am glad it still cannon.

like it shows the downside and perks of being a victim and gave Bill one of his best moments when he was willing to sacrifice himself for his friends. (or K word himself depending on your point of view)

I feel like the alternate ending shows Hank being more accepting of Bobby’s uniqueness more than the actual ending.

“But he’s a good kid.” seems exceedingly high praise for someone as adverse to showing emotion as Hank, and Bobby didn’t have to be a beef-loving grillmaster to earn that.

I never knew this existed. It’s a really nice wrap up but If they’re going to retcon things at the last scene I would’ve loved to see them address Peggy’s mom(s) and the whole West Arlen vs Montana origin stories. Or how after everything that happened in “Cotton’s plot” he opts not to be buried at the Texas State Cemetery

man i really hope they don’t decanonize episodes, making tankin’ it to the streets a dream means that the guys going on about how much they’d miss bill was never real and that’d suck. lesser but same with yankee hankee, i thought it was nice seeing hank come to terms with being born a new yorker, learning that the circumstances of one’s birth are irrelevant

I’m always blown away by your ability to spark my interest in so many different shows I had previously written off as not my thing, but your videos are so informative and passionate I become engrossed in the stories

Damn that's crazy they were going to flat out retcon some episodes out of existence, very interesting.

I hope the re-boot moves forward 10-12 years.

I'd love it if the story progressed.

We could see Luanne's 9 year old daughter who Hank and Peggy have been raising since her parents died in an accident.
( Hank calls her "Lady Bird")

I'm glad we got the series finale we did. Hank and Bobby's relationship is a microcosm of what the show is all about so it's fitting that the finale centers around them

One thing I'd love to see in the new show would be an explanation that Lucky and Luann died in a car accident or something to account for their absence and Hank and Peggy have been raising their daughter ever since. I feel it would make sense and give the Hills that second child they always wanted but couldn't have because of Hanks urethra
