2001-2005 Honda Civic D17a2 Crank No Start Quick and Easy Fix

Its very common to overlook this simple and cheap part to fix the common Engine crank but wont start issue on the 2001-2005 Honda Civics. It shown all the signs of a fuel pump giving out. And at 220k miles it didnt seem too far fetched. would start some times, run fine. Once you shut it off and tried to start it again it would just crank. I wasted $150 on a replacement fuel pump. Only to find that the Temp Sensor ($5 on Rock Auto) was all that was wrong. The part I used was from Oreilly's and cost $32 because I didnt want to wait a week for the part to arrive

2005 civic. Cold weather -10C. Crank but no start. No engine codes. Unplugged the temp sensor and still no start. Plugged a new temp sensor in and it started right up. Saved me a ton of time. Thank you! 🙏

this worked for me. i had already changed the fuel pump, without first checking the fuel pressure, to no avail. after changing the sensor it now starts perfectly. many thanks!

My 2003 civic ex wouldn’t start, replaced the temp sensor, fired up! Thank you thank you! Spent 3 days in shit weather trying to figure out the issue! Mine went out after a couple weeks of weather in the low teens

Hello,
Everyone I went with two professional mechanics and they couldn’t help/ find what was the problem.
Thanks to you only spend $30 for the temp censor and bought a wrench and the socket. Millions tanks

I had same problem In my 2001 civic just now. Wouldn't start after a cold night. Battery would crank it over no problem. I could hear battery loosing power so I hooked up jumper cables and the starter spun twice as fast then it popped off. Batter was from 2017. I put a new on in and works fine now. If it does it again my local parts store has a temp sensor on hand. Thank you for making this video. God bless.

I'm crediting you for my fix. It hit -40°C (same as -40°F) last weekend. And despite it getting warmer (-14°C/7°F), my 7th gen wouldn't start.

Tried a few troubleshooting videos. Got to yours and tried unplugging it. No go. Thought to myself, I have a dead 7th Gen I was going to do a K-swap on. I unbolt the temp sensor from the D17A2 and promptly drop it in the engine bay, lost until spring.

Thought maybe the K-series temp sensor was the same. Grabbed it off my K24. Plugged it into my good Civic but leaving it dangling and the original where it was. Car fires up. Go for a drive... Car stalls at a red light. Temperature gauge was still reading cold when it should have been in the middle. Plugged my connector back into the original. Car drives normally now. Lol

Gonna try this tomorrow on my 04 civic. it has all the signs of a bad fuel pump, but after watching a few videos i def want to try the easy things first.

Thanks bro, you just saved me from having to troubleshoot all sorts o compression tests, connectivity, timing belt adjustment, fuse checks etc. Cheers. I'm guessing that some of "us" had been putting regular old water in the radiators... like our cars were Model T's... which unsurprisingly, corroded the sensor and Emperor-knows-what-else.

Scan tools with live data are pretty cheap these days, and a bad temp sensor would be a fairly easy diagnosis most of the time.

0:24 what do you mean "that's the fuel pump kicking off". Is that beeping because of the pump?

This happen to me today.
My temperature will fluctuate past the halfway point and then cool back down to the regular temperature and just now it’s cranking but not turning on. I am taking it to the mechanic tomorrow. And the check engine light just came on Hopefully your issue will be my issue as well.

lots of thanks from Pakistan. I want to share my case scenario so it might help others.
I have a 10th gen civic, while cruising on motorways i suddenly noticed that its temperature guage started going DOWN, DOWN - 0. I switched off my car, started again and now the car keeps cranking and no start. I tried again it keeps cranking but starts with very rough idle and high rpms. RPMs also fluctuates meanwhile then i switched it off again and starting this time it worked perfectly.
this type of situation happens once a 2 month randomly. What is think i am having the same temperature sensor issue Or the PGM-FI(programmabale fuel injection) relay or fuse malfunctioning randomly.
