Poisoned Waters : Fast Fashion Kills

The Citarum River in Indonesia, once a vital resource for millions, has become one of the most polluted rivers in the world. Industrial waste from over 500 textile factories has turned its waters into a toxic mix of chemicals, endangering the health of local communities and ecosystems.
Families suffer from diseases linked to contaminated water, while fish and crops dwindle. Investigations reveal alarming levels of pollutants in rice, water, and even children's hair.
As brands like H&M and Uniqlo face scrutiny, the question remains: can the global fashion industry clean up its act and save the Citarum before it’s too late?

Wow, this hit hard. I used to think my biggest problem with fast fashion was shrinking my shirt in the wash—turns out it’s shrinking entire ecosystems. Hope brands start caring as much as we do about clean clothes AND clean rivers!

As an Indian, I would say that these places are still 2000 times clean than our scared river Ganges where people are only pushing the pathogens from their bodies into it.

The Pasig River (Philippines) is a very good template that Indonesian govt and NGOs can emulate to save the Citarum river. Our Formee President Duterte has made a significant difference through his no nonsense leadership. It's a matter of political will and cooperation by various sectors.

The amount of poison everywhere and the amount of cover up, just so that the 1% can become incredible rich is crazy 😢

Look on the bright side, with almost a hundred factories closing in 2024, the Citarum should be on its way to recovery. Unless the other factories increase their pollution instead.

Big brands are directly associated with the infant mortality in Indonesia or residents beside the river. This is not acceptable

Got Agent Orange poisoning 50 years ago, from working on a commercial flower farm, so folks could have flowers for Valentines. Still have problems from that. That farm is still in business, probably a lot more sick workers, my manager died of cancer. This was in the USA.

For context: this is an old documentary IIRC, since I've watched this few months ago, I searched around & it seems to be premiered on 2019

I somewhat followed updates for this river's maintenance & for if you want to look up, it is coined under "Citarum Harum" project, which AFAIK is still ongoing to this day

The unfortunate things about this is that the cleanup activities on there is not a one-off thing to do, since the other thing that causes environmental damage is the fact that there were bunch of locally-sourced companies & jobs that people depend for their livelihood, and I don't think that it's fair if those are just demolished "for the greater good"

I don't know how to solve those tbh, but if I can think of any then it would probably for either the government or foreign companies to invest in the "processing site" like the one mentioned in the video that can at least filter out the dangerous stuff first, rather than just dumping it directly, since it seems that those kind of facilities just doesn't have enough capital to do so

Yang saya heran masyarakat sekitarnya mengeluhkan air yang kotor tapi masih membuang sampah sembarangan.

The river full of waste and rubbish is the Cikarang-Bekasi-Laut River (CBL) which flows into the Muara Gembong area, Bekasi Regency, West Java, Indonesia. It's terrible, the polluted water flows to the coast destroying coastal fishermen and pond fishermen. Starting from factory waste, plastic waste, to medical waste, it is often found there.
