Thought I’d pop along to see a dedicated gold prospector in action, very impressive Darren, your in one of my most favourite places to be Scotland 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿 a bit remote for me but stunningly beautiful, a great hobby, ‘The Call of the Wild’ must be in your blood lad to carry all that equipment up hill as well, that’s a massive achievement, well done 👍 you will sleep well tonight 😅

I know somewhere in Somerset that we found some small pieces of gold.... On a school project 1980s. Id like to go back, but not certain how the law stands with river authoritys and land owners ?

You need an off-road e-bike, Daz ! Better than yomping all that gear.

Do you need a permit/permission to pan any river in scotland?

Hi Kids, this is from an 84-year-old enthusiast who is very interested in your efforts at finding gold. However, I have some comments that may or may not improve your gold outcome. I notice that when you fill a pan and keep the filtrate, you then throw the remaining spoil into the river. This spoil should be spread out on a dry patch of river bed, and at the end of the day, metal detect quickly as the rocks may be the source of your gold dust finds. Secondly, I feel that your sluice is running too great a volume of water, which, to my mind, will cause gold to be lost in the flow. So firstly, reduce the flow as much as possible and introduce vibration, and I don’t mean a concrete vibrator. A small vibrator can be made from a toy electric car motor with an off-centred weight. This will be sufficient to remove the natural stiction of most materials and encourage a lot of the non-gold materials to pass through without interruption. This motor, with a little thought to attachment, can be introduced to the pan when panning for gold separation. At the very worst, you can hold the motor against the pan while you separate the gold findings, make a simple fixing bracket, and you will find that the separation is faster and more discriminating. Please accept this as hopefully helpful, as my intentions are to help, not to criticise. I would dearly love to join you in your gold prospecting trips, but unfortunately, I have chronic heart disease and spinal damage, so I can only help with my mind. I am currently working on a way to use the weight of gold passing down a sloping tube to encourage the gold to pass close to one particular outside edge of the tube. This setup repeated 5 or 6 times will give a separation efficiency of better than 1 %. I have yet to build this and test its function, and this will be slow as the tube must of necessity be made as two ‘D’ shaped tubes to maintain the separation at the end of each section, with the gold going down one tube due to gravity and the tailings passing down the other. The positioning of the tubes, together with the angular placements, is going to be quite critical if the device is to work. Sorry to ramble on, keep up the good work, and if I can get the device running efficiently, I will let you know. Regards MoK
