Architecture includes Master and Workers. Master is the namenode, worker is the Datanode. Backup (replication of data) is maintained in Datanodes. Namenode has Metadata, manages file system namespace, checks availability of Datanode, takes care of replication. Low cost h/w is used to store data, Datanodes are responsible for storing, replicating and deleting from instructions of Namenode, it sends health report to the Namenode every 3 seconds. There is a secondary Namenode that supports the primary Namenode and takes the checkpoint.
