But it is “bitte;” pronounced “bit-uh” not “bitter.” I lived there a total of 5 years in the 60’s and 70’s and was close to bi-lingual when we came back to the States. I went back for the first time in the mid-90’s and was really surprised how quickly it came back. Within a few days I could make myself understood and could pretty much understand anything being said.
