James Gunn never said the movie is not part of the DCU. I think James Gunn meant that Superman Legacy is the first movie in the DCU that he as the head of DC is producing. Not necessarily the first movie in the new universe.

I think that James Gunn has his own plans for Blue Beetle and how he will fit in his DCU storyline. I know this first BB movie will bomb for sure but I think James Gunn will add his flavor and finesse to the character within his storyline with other DC characters. I have hope for James Gunn. I love all the Guardian movies, The Suicide Squad, Slither, and Peacemaker. I truly believe that James Gunn will make DC relevant and a success…. But… Butt… 🍑…. Be prepared for Blue Beetle to have Shazam 2 type numbers. I’ll be surprised if it breaks $400mil in the box office but I doubt it will even hit $150mil… and yes, I’m planning on watching it so there’s no DC hate from me. I’m just keeping it real and 💯

Look at some of these comments assuming the movie will bomb. Doesn’t matter what DC films track record is. You don’t know if the film will bomb or do good. Period.

To be fair Blue Beatle doesn't have a strong connection to the DCEU like Flash/Shazam. So people might give it a chance like The Batman

You completely misinterpreted Gunn’s comment. The reason Blue Beetle isn’t considered the first DCU movie isn’t because it’s not canon, it’s because it wasn’t made under Gunn and not part of the overarching story. The events of the film will still be canon.
