It is not enough to just play Jazz chords. You need to be able to make music with them and that means developing a few more skills, but that is also what makes it more fun to play and get you to the place where it really starts to sound beautiful.

My name is Jens Larsen, Danish Jazz Guitarist, and Educator. The videos on this channel will help you explore and enjoy Jazz. Some of it is how to play jazz guitar, but other videos are more on Music Theory like Jazz Chords or advice on how to practice and learn Jazz, on guitar or any other instrument.

The videos are mostly jazz guitar lessons, but also music theory, analysis of songs and videos on jazz guitars.

What is the most overlooked exercise for comping?

I am a middle-aged American who has played guitar for over 50 years, mostly in the classic blues-rock genres. Jens makes me want to learn jazz. These videos open my ears and eyes in ways I did not imagine. They are inspirational, and I am grateful.

Only a maestro of considerable skill and intelligence could condense such an important lesson into 5 minutes. However, I don't doubt it took a lot of thought how to do this. This has relevance to any guitar player in any genre. Many thanks Jens for continuing to support your fans on YouTube.

The fact that we can find material of this quality (both in substance and presentation) free and effortlessly absolutely blows my mind. Thank you so much, Jens!

About long and short notes. My teachers in the past always had me work on rhythmic intentionality. Playing long notes is equally as important as those short hits. But the key is to knowing exactly what type of rhythm those held notes imply. Jim Hall played comps with held chords, but the key was the rhythm and where those held notes would terminate. Nothing was held and forgotten. A held note is still a note with a duration. Easier said than done. Excellent video, as usual!

So simple, but such sweet sounds, I think I'll give jazz a try, it allows for more versatility in sound.

I love how this lesson connects with the recent short "Embellishing Easy Jazz Chords" lesson also based on Dm-G-C. Really helps me to connect things. Thanks, Jens!
