Episode 1: An introduction to World Handicap System | Understanding WHS with HowDidiDo

The time has come for the new World Handicap System (WHS) to be put into practice. Although originally launched in January 2020 in many countries, the new WHS will be in place for golfers in GB&I from November 2nd 2020.

In the build up to this date, there have been a lot of rumours circulating about why these governing bodies have decided to adopt a new World Handicap System, what it will entail, how it will work, and most of all how it will affect golfers' handicaps.

HowDidiDo, Europe's largest online golfing community has partnered up with England Golf to hear directly from an expert - Gemma Hunter, the Head of Handicapping and Course Rating at England Golf to help you understand the changes.

Why has PCC not been applied to our 8 out of 20 calculations?

If you submit a casual card that ends up as an NR, will it be accepted to the WHS ?

Some of the calculations are based on the differences between scratch and 18 handicappers, or just on scratch players, but handicaps can now go up to 54, so how do these new measurents apply to those with an index over 18?

Trying hard to bring my handicap under 20 but every time I play well in a comp some 30+ handicapper gets ridiculous scores, on a plus note my handicap has come down but I get an extra shot on the front 9 🤷🤷

Why is it that my last round has a different score differential with England golf to that on V1.
I scored 84 off a course handicap of 11, corse rating 124 PCC of 1. Competition handicap was 10 and I had a 6 on a par3 index 11. Eng golf diff is 11.6 V1 is 11.5

As per the pre launch information we received there’s not a lot of detail given in this explanation. Gemma keeps stating the obvious, what we need to know is
1.How to set up competitions after November 2 and when to apply allowances.
2 Some of the questions I’ve been asked by members is, why apply 95% of the playing hcp in a medal Comp when calculations have already been carried out. 3. Is it possible to appeal your given hcp index if it’s not a true reflection.
Have to say that after such a long time in preparation I would have expected the explanations to be more comprehensive..

That's grim - hope epi two is better. Hardly any content that we need right now and lots of waffle about why the system needed changing - and mostly reasons we don't care about - I do care the system should be fairer - but I don't play against players from all over the World - hardly anyone does.

When the competition results come through on HowDidiDo as you know it's possible to click on anyone's name and see how they did hole by hole. However this is not available to see a female round hole by hole. Why is this?

NO YOU TAKE IT OFF BY 95%. IF I PLAY IN A COMP OFF YELLOWS I PLAY OFF MY HANDICAP YES !!! ? NO YOU TAKE ONE STROKE OFF SO ITS LESS BY ONE STROKE. IF I PLAY IN A STABLEFORD ACCORDING TO YOUR SYSTEM ITS 85% OUR CLUB PLAYS 95% BUT I STILL LOSE ONE OR TWO STROKES . MATCHPLAY, SINGLES, PAIRS, GREENSOMES, FOURSOMES, 4BBB, TEAM EVENTS, I CAN UNDERSTAND. SO WHEN DO I PLAY OFF THE HANDICAP GIVEN PER TEES . I DO NOT IS THE ANSWER. AND WITH 10 MINUTES PERMITTED ON THE PREMISES BEFORE TEE OFF TO GET EQUIPMENT OUT REPORT INTO CLUBHOUSE AND THE WAITING TO GO IN PLUS NOT ENOUGH RAKES TO GO AROUND AND BUNKERS HAVE FOOTPRINTS UNRAKED DUE TO COVID19 RULES . WE DO NOT GET OUT ON TIME SO BY THE TIME I'VE SET THE PHONE UP I'VE PLAYED 5 HOLES WITH 4 SCORES OF 7 ON THE CARD, SO WHERE IS MY INCENTIVE TO PLAY COMPETITIONS.

I think the new system is fairer and more accurate and once bedded in will be better, and more interesting, for the average golfer.
