I’d like to remind folks that unions do more than create better pay and benefits for workers. In the summers of my university years I worked in a union shop, a dairy. One 95-degree day I was loading trucks, sweating from head to toe when a lower-level manager (a foreman) ordered me moved to the cooler where it’s 40 degrees. I was denied time to change my sweaty uniform or to get a jacket. The union steward noticed this and asked me about it. He took the foreman to the management offices where there was some yelling and swearing but the steward knew the union contract and its provisions for the ‘Health and Welfare’ of its workers and changed this behavior and I was given the time I needed the change and get a jacket. I’m a retired IT professional. Unions are rare in my line of work but just about everywhere I’ve worked there’s been at least one jerk who likes to run roughshod over his/her subordinates. Unions protect workers, health and welfare and do so many other things.
Which, believe it or not, brings me to democracy. Most corporations are not intentionally bad or evil but they are top-down organizations where you basically do as you’re told and any organization without controls can be and often will be abusive. Unions are a check on their behavior and create a more democratic environment; one where the individual does have a voice.

For years....
Britain, Canada, Australia fought savagely to defend the free world and suffered while the US profited handsomely from the carnage.
