I've been working at the Authorised Philips Service of Greece at the coffee machines department. As you probably know Gaggia is acquired by Philips (and the coffee brand Saeco), so what you see as the automatic machines arsenal of Gaggia (as well as all the new Gaggia series with the pressurised portafilter) is Saeco, hence Philips.

Having worked with these machines for a long long time I got to the conclusion that it's impossible to brew a descent cup of coffee with light roast, specialty coffees. You can never fine tune the grind settings. The conical burr grinders are of poor quality and produce inconsistent grinds with a lot of "dust". The automatic portafilter is a narrow, deep cylinder that changes entirely what we know of a proper coffee bed preparation from our manual protafilter experience.
Check any coffee puck in the disposal bin and you ll see first hand the coarsely ground, wet, under-extracted coffee lying there.

Automatic machines work better with darker, Italian-style roast, mainly because these roasts can easily "cheat" on you...

...yes, they are convenient
...no, they are not great quality in brewing (except if you compare them to Nespresso... anything is better than Nespresso!)

P.S.: I greatly appreciate the environmental approach you took on showing the extend of plastic waste disposal in the modern era of convenience. Capsules are an environmental menace.

Hey Marc. I'm in Australia & looking at getting a super auto, Just found Gaggia on the internet here in WA, was looking at a Jura Ena 8 but I was put off by some of the negative reviews on the temps of the coffee & milk. The Gaggia looks a good machine.

Irish man watching from Dubai. I love your enthusiasm for the coffee, thank you for taking the time. My question, how reliable are these machines and do they maintain consitant beverage quality over time. ?.

Maybe you'll see this - but what advantages would a Super Auto have over a Nespresso OL system? I really like my Nespresso, but am just wondering if the jump to a Super Auto is worth it?

Love the videos so thank you. I do have a question if you could help please. Which would be a better set up? As you recommended in another video - the sage smart grinder pro and a Gaggia classic, or the velasca prestige? Is it just convenience that perhaps makes the velasca a better option? I don’t mind the effort of separate machines but not sure.

I’m thinking abort Brera or the new Cardona Style. Almost same size, Cardona cost a little more, but has much more options. Which one would you choose??

Hey Mark! I used my Brera for about a year before investing in a Rancilio SIlvia. But I have recently brought back out the Brera and its just so much more convenient and takes all of the guesswork out of the equation (also a heck of a lot easier). Seriously, though, how much different is the coffee quality of the Brera compared to the other two more expensive models?

Hey Mark! During the video you said this is the machine I use if I’m doing a long coffee not if I’m doing an espresso or something to that effect and I was just curious what one touch machine you would use to do an espresso. Thanks!

Great video!
I like your videos man, I watch with my morning cappuccinos.
Question :
I like really dark roasts(or did, pre-good coffee...I believe these things are acquired, anyway )
I know the brand beans I use are considered pretty garbage in the enthusiast space, but I am accustomed to the flavor and still use the espresso roast as a base and mix in various gourmet $15/pound stuff as those are too bright/full usually for my taste in full strength and the espresso roast is a very neutral profile and works with a lot of others...
I prefer a chocolate / caramel / nutty flavor.
Those beans that you recommend all the time... what do they taste like?

Which machine would you recommend, namely the Jura Ena 8 and the Babila? They both cost about the same.

*Desperately* looking for a single serve coffee machine. However, four (4) adults living under one roof and no one likes the same coffee.

Right now we have a Barista Touch (single solution using scale/doser) and a Keurig K475. What we have works but the Keurig is not fresh ground. Ideally I need a machine that has 4 grinders or a single whole bean spooned in. And *no* the solution is not for me to buy 4 identical machines. Also I wouldn't mind a direct water line option.

I've thought about an automatic pour over with a single serve grinder, and eventually getting something like a Profitec Pro 700.
