As soon as you proposed using the sleeping pills on her my thought was it would make her move to the bedroom, then you could lock the main door, turn out the lights, and close yourself up in the closet.
Hopefully the intruder would turn on the lights in the bedroom when trying to wake the wife. (I have never played the game, so that was just my thoughts on it)
