Directed by visionary sci-fi animator René Laloux (Fantastic Planet) and designed by the legendary Jean Giraud (a.k.a. Mœbius), The Time Masters is a trippy, visually fantastic foray into existentialist space adventure. After his parents are killed on the dangerous planet Perdide, young Piel (voiced by Frédéric Legros) survives by maintaining radio contact with Jaffar (Jean Valmost), a pilot transporting the exiled Prince Matton (Yves-Marie) and Princess Belle (Monique Thierry) from their former kingdom. Jaffar seeks the help of Silbad (Michel Elias), a cheerful old-timer who knows how to circumvent Perdide’s hazards, including brain-devouring insects and watery graves. Along the way, Jaffar and company encounter a pair of impish homunculi stowaways, identity-less angels controlled by an amorphous hive mind, and the Masters of Time, mysterious beings who can bend reality and perhaps reveal to the heroes their secret origins and destinies.

In theaters 7/26.

I saw this as a kid in the UK in the 80s - I guess it was a dub. It was like a fever dream and I spent decades trying to figure out what it was with a vague recollection of the very weird plot and setting. Finally rediscovered it a few years back. Recently watching Scavengers Reign took me right back to it, must have been an influence.

Fascinating art style. Then again, it was the '80s and Moebius, so of course it's fascinating.

I saw it forty years ago in a cinema in Hungary. A beautiful and sad work that was produced in Hungary at Pannónia Stúdió IV - of course a completely hand-drawn film. It was released as a comic and later on DVD.

Never even heard of this. This looks incredible. Why did french animation never pop off in the US? This is so cool!

In either December of 73 or possibly early 74, a 9 year old kid went into a theater to watch Fantastic Planet. The kid who went in was not the same creature who came out, and the incredible imagination packed into that film reverberates for me to this day. Imagine, then, my surprise to discover The Time Masters, now, in 2024 - a film I had never even heard of until five minutes ago... and I work in animation [go figure!]. While it looks stylistically and tonally very different from Fantastic Planet, I can't wait to snag a copy of this on Blu-Ray.

Saw it when I was a teenager, in the local movie theater, in 1982 if I recall, and then it aired on TV once or twice afterwards. I got the DVD now and I cherish it ^^
Watched it a few weeks ago, and that movie hasn't lost it's magic. The animation didn't age very well, but it gives a refreshing whiff of craftmenship. The narrative is a little slower than what we are used to nowadays, but a little contemplation doesn't hurt.
Great that it's being restored and given a second life !

Moebius was a big Innovator in Comic Art and this seems to be a fascinating Film. His Influence on SciFi Movies and modern Pop Art is undisputable (Alien, Jodorowskyˋs Dune) The fifth Element, Tron + Abyss).

Wow, what? wow. How did I miss this? I was alive. I saw Fantastic Planet, I saw Heavy Metal. In fact, I collected Heavy Metal magazines for years back then. Seems like some kind of ad would have run or something, even MTV had some kind of animation show where AeonFlux ran or even a preview at a Jodorowsky film. Just missed it. Well, whatever, here we are!

A classic from my childhood that left its mark on my heart. Glad to see it receive the accolades it deserves.

Terrific! I love the animation of that era, which has also inspired the modern Moebius renaissance with projects like Scavenger's Reign and Mars Express.

I watched this movie a lot when I was a kid. It was recorded by my father on our VCR, and I loved watching and listening to the end credits song with a lump in my throat. It is a sad movie, and a masterpiece.
