Join historian Dan Snow as he explores the places that shaped England’s story, in this exclusive series with History Hit. In this episode, Dan visits one of the most iconic historic landmarks in the world — Stonehenge. Built around 2500 BC, in the late Neolithic period, these famous stones were brought here from as far away as the Preseli Hills in south-west Wales. While its exact purpose is unknown, the monument aligns with the movements of the sun, suggesting it may have been a form of prehistoric temple.

We visited Stonehenge during the winter solstice. We were able to walk between the stones with some Druids.

Bill Bryson on Stonehenge: "Can you imagine trying to talk six hundred people into helping you drag a fifty-ton stone eighteen miles across the countryside and muscle it into an upright position, and then saying, 'Right, lads! Another twenty like that...and then we can party!'"

Now imagine similar things being said for the bluestones...smaller, but from much further away.

It would be better without the music over it. Can't hear what he's say because of the loud music.

Dr. Snow speaks of the builders of Stone Henge as being ancestors and that got me wondering, do we have DNA from any of these neolithic people and would we be able to find out if those genetic markers still exist in the modern population? Obviously Britain has seen many waves of migration since the building of Stone Henge, so it would be interesting to see if the builders of Stone Henge really could be considered ancestors in a strictly biological sense.
