Set a most recent date as default date in Power BI date slicer?

It’s very simple than you think to actually set a changing/default date in Power Bi. Usually, every time we refresh the report, we see the dates in the slicer do not update according to dataset. We don’t see the most recent date in the report. But we can achieve that with one single step :D

Hey Guys,

You must have run into a problem when you are working with date slicer in Power BI that when you refresh a report, the default date in the date slicer should be changing accordingly but it keeps showing the same date no matter how many times you refresh the report.
This is a simple power bi video/tutorial for beginners that gives you a quick fix on how to solve this issue.

Thanks man, really helpful. It's simple though but most of the developers knows the struggle behind it as It's the basic thing the user wants in the report.

Hi. Can you please let me know if I can do the same for the start date to select it to a default value every week? The end date will be the most recent data and the start date will be 2 weeks ahead of it. But I should be able to see previous weeks also in the slicer. Thanks!

I wanted the second date slicer you have created. but my requirements is that whenever a new user open the report he should always get the max date from the table. how can I accomplish that?

Thank you! This is really useful!
Will this work if I make the change in service instead of desktop?

Thanks a lot !! Hope this works for my case too - I have to have previous week (mon to sun) as default date and every week it should automatically change. I have a new column in date table that shows me previous week dates alone. So what I do is on my date slice I have this filter applied (to show only previous week). Currently I notice that the filter is correctly changing but my date slicer is still set on the date on which I have published the report. If I manually clear the slicer it will start showing correct values. I have tried bookmark too but some how to date is okay but from date is not changing.
Let me delete the slicer create a new one without touching dates
🤞hope it works

Brother 1 question.

I've been grappling with a bit of a challenge in Power BI, specifically regarding date filtering, and I was hoping to get some advice.

Here's the scenario: I've set up a "Date" table in Power BI that spans from January 1, 2000, to January 1, 2030. Now, what I'm aiming for is to have a date slicer or filter on my dashboard that automatically defaults to the current week, meaning from the first day of the week through the last. For instance, today is March 15, 2024, so ideally, the slicer should default to March 11, 2024, through March 17, 2024.

However, here's the kicker: I also want users to have the flexibility to select dates outside of the current week if they need to analyze data over a longer period. So while the default setting should always be the current week, users should be able to freely adjust the slicer to their desired timeframe.

I've been tinkering around with Power BI, but it seems like achieving this functionality isn't as straightforward as I initially thought. It feels like Power BI might not be as intuitive in this particular area.

If anyone has any tips or suggestions on the easiest way to tackle this issue, I'd greatly appreciate it. Thanks in advance for any help you can provide!

As per your suggestion, I did the same..In desktop it is working as expected.. But in Power BI service, it is not updating to today. Do we need to refresh the source??

Thank you for this tutorial. How can I set the default date to be the most recent date from my data for all visuals without aggregating all the data?

Does the same thing applies for service because the end user always tries to change it manually

Your first date is still defaulting to the absolute minimum date. It could be 20 years, meaning 20 years of data trying to populate by default. We also need to set the default START date to some value, such as last 7/30/60 days.

Hi, I want the start day should be three days before today and the end date should be the current date as the default date slicer. How can I achieve it for the start date?
