i don't know any other channel who does this - great content, thanks!

Thank you, Jeremy, for this video! This is the costliest part of any EV, and was the key part of my request in an earlier video. The rest of the components are much easier to price, since I am in Canada and there will be huge differences there. Batteries are the heart of an EV in every stage, and you explained everything very concisely. This was a week of physics 200 level classes in engineering, at least, and you made it make sense in 18 minutes. This is why you are a must-watch in my opinion, your detail and organization and condensing of information educate in a friendly manner. The Series/Parallel explanation is the best I have seen. Keep it up, good sir.

After that 'smart charge' company went out of business a couple weeks ago and abandoned their app, I know this one will end up the same way. I love my Siemens industrial car charger - has a 'delay charge' button on the front and that is all.

Those images at about 7:30 when you said "half a tesla pack" were really funny! Great content, keep it up.

Thanks for the breakdown! I prefer to use $/kWh and Wh/kg as metrics when comparing battery options, but the energy and power densities are definitely two areas people tend to overlook when planning out a battery. I'm still on the fence about using NMC for my builds, but that is mostly because they are usually only available used. I'm impressed you were able to find someone to provide you new modules directly.

One thing I would change, invert those kWh/x calculations into x/kWh. That gives you nicer numbers. And when talking weight/kWh please just use the actual unit lb/kWh.
lb/kWh: 11.38 | 14.62 | 12.77 | 10.38
$/kWh: 311.88 | 307.31 | 209.20 | 283.02

Love your honest content. Pricing of the batteries is very useful information to have when thinking about doing an EV build. Batteries are still a very large outlay, especially when comparing it against a gas tank and a new ICE (and that’s not even taking into account the cost of the EV motors). I know all the arguments for total running cost for life of both and I think EV’s are a great option if you can stump up the money upfront.

I've stayed super excited about the 300zx build! Also great information, I've never seen basic battery packs explained before. Super helpful.

I love watching your videos. Thank you for the great content. I wish all creators would include the timer on their sponsorship ad. The yellow line is always nice, but the count down was the icing on the cake.

Great explanation of parallel and series and how the battery types are named. Thank you

Power tool battery packs are a good way of explaining series and parallel, especially if you have a 12v pack as well.

Designing battery systems is challenging, but a bit of research goes a long way. Good job explaining the basics.

A couple more points about used Tesla batteries. Most of them that you see for sale today are from Model S/X Tesla's (18650 Panasonic), and the packs may be as much as 12 years old! Another consideration is battery pack module length, as Tesla batteries are grouped into long (70") pack modules. Length will limit how (if) you can fit them in your EV project vehicle, and cooling. With 4 long batteries making one 50kWh-88kWh pack. Also Model 3 standard packs use LFP (rather than NMC or NCA) batteries. Which have lower energy density (have less power and more weight) than traditional (in the U.S.) LFP is the most common automotive battery used in Chinese EVs as they cost much less. The advantages for LFP in addition to cost are fewer cooling requirements and having the ability to regularly charge to 100% with minimal degradation. The best deal that I've seen locally is a 50kWh pack from a 2023 Model 3 with 33K miles for $1400 for all four pack modules! Getting batteries from a battery or EV business means that you can get a warranty, as opposed to taking the risk of buying used batteries. It is great that you show this comparison, plus the pricing, and your reasoning and project planning. The battery packs are the single most expensive components in any EV project. As always, keep up the good work!

Great video! Really nice to have a little tutorial on how exactly it all works, I honestly would've listened to you go into more detail! Look forward to the next video :)

Great contents! Other channel just slap EV together and call it good while your actually give details how it put together and where to source it from. Keep up with the awesome video!

My project is a way off yet, and still yet to pick the batteries. This was a great vid to help understand what it all means. Would be good to cover the options of power vs longevity too; I know that you can have more of one than the other or a balance - would be good to understand that (if that's still a thing!). Mine; I want power! Range isn't as much of a worry, as it's a weekend warrior

Explaining the module's parallel connection 15:14 is wrong. You do not parallel columns for each battery, you parallel columns at the start and the end of the column like you explained for the individual battery (positive to negative and negative to positive). The simplest explanation is that we need to consider one column as a one big battery that gives higher (summed up) voltage than the individual ones. The positive terminal of this battery is the first battery in this column, and the negative terminal is the last battery in this column. Then we parallel this big battery (column) to other big batteries (columns) to get higher amps (also summed up, but this time by number of columns). If you can, please explain and correct this in the next video, because your explanation is fire and short circuit hazard. Anyways, keep up the great work 👍!

For the best volumetric energy density, gravimetric energy density and power density, NCA is still the king followed by closely by NMC.

Love the idea and content, I think you need to take a few tips from Engineering Explained. His white board skills are second to none.
