Otyrar (Turarband, Turar, Tarband, Farab) is a medieval settlement. The place is located 7 km North-West from the train station of Otyrar district. In 1218, under the command of Kairkhan, the ruler of Khorezmshah Muhammad in Otyrar, the merchants of Genghis Khan's caravan were killed. This was the reason for Genghis Khan's invasion of Central Asia. In historical literature, this massacre is known as "The Otyrar catastrophe". In the autumn of 1219, the Mongol troops reached Otyrar. As a result of the Mongol invasion, Otyrar was destroyed, and the inhabitants of the city were massacred. But after the catastrophe of 1219, Otyrar was reborn. Archaeological excavations in Otyrar began in 1969 after the organization of the Otyrar archaeological expedition of the Academy of Sciences of Kazakhstan under the leadership of K. Akishev.
