On thisanniversary, we remember Piper Bill Millin who was among the first waves of soldiers to bravely storm the beach at Sword Beach, playing his bagpipes to inspire troops as he walked. Amazingly, some Germans reportedly didn't shoot him, believing he was the Angel of Death!

That was probably one of the hardest episodes of Band of Brothers, when they came across one of those camps and then the medics arrived and told them to stop feeding them, then locked them back into the camp for there safety after. I cry every time I watch that one. Damn the cruelty of men at our worse.

Bill Millin was technically Canadian born in Regina, Canada. His father was of Scottish origin. He relocated to Scotland during WW2. Afterwards, he lived and died in England. It's easy to see how someone can get confused into saying he was Scottish since he was of that origin and even relocated there at one point. People could easily believe he was English because he fought for the English military and later lived and died in England, but he was born a Canadian citizen. He was nationally Canadian with Scottish ethnicity and likey English by culture since he likely lived a good deal in England and was influenced by culture there. It would be fair to say he's Canadian, Scottish or English since all 3 are true and part of his life by origin, heritage and culture. That'd be like me saying I'm American with European ethnicities (English, Scandanavian, German, etc.), but grew up in Japan.

“He was crazy” had to have been a substitute for “He was playing absolute tunes”

Love to see Bill included in this. He played piper for my 3 cousin, Brigadier Simon Christopher Joseph Fraser, 15th Lord Lovat, 4th Baron Lovat, DSO, MC, TD, JP, DL was a prominent British Commando during the Second World War and the 25th Chief of the Clan Fraser of Lovat.

Regarding the holocaust survivors, it is called refeeding syndrome. When we ensure starvation our bodies releases less insulin due to lower blood sugars. If a starving person suddenly eats a lot, the blood sugar spikes and then the body releases a lot of insulin. Insulin draws that sugar into the body cells, but it also draws in potassium, phosphate, and magnesium. Thus there is not enough of those electrolytes in the blood stream and the heart enters an arrhythmia which kills them (low phosphate also interferes with the bodies ability to make ATP/energy but that doesn’t kill as fast as low potassium)

Piper Bill and Mad Jack needed to play together on the battlefield - surely they would have been unstoppable.
