Justin Roiland’s departure hasn’t changed Rick and Morty. The yet-to-be-identified actors playing the title characters sound pretty much identical to Roiland. and the first two episodes of season 7 offer the same mix of sharp meta humor, emotional depth, and grotesque animation that has always made Rick and Morty great, delivering bombastic standalone adventures that offer just a bit of character growth.

This season feels more like Family Guy than Rick and Morty. If it isn’t referencing or making fun of celebrities and pop culture icons, it’s recycling characters from previous episodes in a way that’s cheap and oddly disappointing.

This whole season is just slower and watered down, created by people trying too hard to be funny, symbolic, and intellectual all at the same time.

Rolland gave this show character and genuine humor. The show feels hollow and like its trying too hard now. Hopefully the season improves other wise the shows finshed.
