Why Red iPhones Say 'Product' On The Back

iPhones come in a variety of colors, but only the red models say the word ‘product’ on the back. This is due to a charity partnership Apple has that began back in 2006. The organization is called Product Red, cofounded by the singer Bono and activist Bobby Shriver.

The reason why Apple is working with Product Red has to do with the story about how iTunes was made.
Back in the day the model of $0.99/song was thought of as something crazy to do by the recording companies, who usually wanted to sell the entire album which had 1-2 hit songs. However the first band that decided to work with Apple to help their innovative approach was U2. And U2's frontman is Bono. Who also founded (Product) Red. So it's kind of Apple's gratitude to the band.

The reason it says "product"RED on the back - instead of having the apple logo in place of the word product (as happens with every other partnership of this charity) - is because Steve Jobs wouldn't allow the apple logo to be placed inside the parenthesis. The partnership nearly fell apart completely over this and so the janky "logo" was born

Red is my absolute favourite colour and the fact that some of the money from the proceeds go to charitable causes (including the covid virus) is something that adds to the positivity. I just wish they offered the iPhone 13 Pro in product red since I’d buy the upgraded version over the standard 13 then

My mom got the iPhone 7 plus back when it came out I think it was the first iPhone to be colored red. I saw the (Product) Red logo on the back of the phone and I investigated the ordeal by reading the booklet that came with the phone and there where I found out that it's charity work.

Nonetheless, you missed in this video the fact that it would originally be (APPLE) red, but steve jobs hated the idea because he thought it would ‘cheapen’ apple’s image and logo, and also because it could confuse customers. (This is on the Walter Isaacson’s Jobs biography)

I did get a Product Red iPod touch, in fact, it was my first Apple device. Later on I decided to always pick black/gray colors to keep everything consistent, but I would definitely buy cases in the future so that I can support the cause. I did learn about it a couple of years ago and it’s really nice what Apple is doing to help.

I've never thought of searching what product red means. I thought it was exclusively Apple's trade mark to stand out among smartphone manufacturers

Have the product red iPhone XR and love the way it looks. I want to upgrade to the 13 Pro Max but disappointed apple didn’t make a product red version of it and only for the regular 13.

I didn't know about it, I was thinking about buying a red iPhone just for an aesthetic reason, but now I founded out the reason why the red version is called “product red”, I will definitely be the happiest buying a red one. Thanks for this video! ❤️
