I was skeptical at first, but these are solid, sensible tips.
I would add that the stickout for flux core wire is recommended to be about 3/4 of an inch as opposed to the normal 3/8 of a inch for solid wire. This is necessary to give the flux time to preheat before entering the weld pool.

Lincoln has a flex core welder for about $280. HF and generics are as low as $100. For a guy who right now thinks he's just going to be doing occasional light duty welding using 120v, basically doing repairs on cars and bikes, is there any real benefit to spending the extra for the Lincoln welder? Is there a cheap brand or model you recommend? Thanks for the tips!
