This is a video for all you folks out there that want to get into acrylic painting but have no idea where to start or what materials and supplies you should have to get started! Have no fear, because in this video I break down the essential acrylic painting supplies you need to get started on your painting journey. I also talk about some supplies and materials I like to use that aren't essential, but definitely helpful while painting.

If you haven't done any painting before and want to learn how to paint and maybe try out some of my painting tutorial videos, figuring out what you need is a great place to start. In this video I really focused on how to keep art supplies inexpensive. A lot of people think painting comes with a big cost, but it is actually very easy to be on a budget and to paint as a regular hobby!

If you have watched any of my painting tutorial I usually do a quick over view of what supplies I'm using, but this video goes way more in depth on things like "what brand of paint should you use" and "what kinds of brushes should I have?" etc.

If you have any questions on art supplies or acrylics or anything that might be on your mind, let me know in the comments below! I try and get to as many as I possibly can.

Thanks for hanging with me!

I would also recommend going to a goodwill, thrift store, or Ross for some supplies. I see a lot of art supplies at Ross for very cheap and I also found the same kind of tabletop easel that Emily has, still in the box, at goodwill for $3.99

BE AWARE YOU SHOULD NOT DUMP ACRYLIC PAINT DOWN YOUR DRAINS. In small amounts, it'll probably be okay, but acrylic paint hardens into plastic once it's dry and can build up and clog the drain. I live in an apartment where if you so much as drop an eyelash down the drain, it'll back up for a week, so I don't take chances with my paint.

I use a paper plate as a palette, and because of the buildup of acrylic paint, I can use it over and over again. I've had mine for about two years now, and it's still in good condition. To keep the paint from drying up if I think I'll use it again in a day or two, I set the plate on top of a damp washrag and cover the plate. When I'm finished with the paint, I either spread it around the plate to let it dry (and it makes interesting splash designs on the plate), or I wipe it clean with a paper towel and throw it in the trash. That way none of it goes down the drain to clog it.

me watching you say “you dont need to spend a lot you just need 4 colors and a couple of brushes” after spending 150 dollars on 64 colors, brushes and canvases: 🙃🙃🙃

You will need:
Brushes
Paint (primary colors to start off)
Surface to paint on
Water (in jar or cup)
Paper towels
Palette knife (optional but I would highly recommend)
Gesso (optional but i would highly recommend)
That’s it! 😁

I’ve been in therapy for a while for some things I’ve been dealing with. When I was a kid I painted all the time with crappy crayola paint because tht was all we could afford lol and that was the happiest I’ve ever been. Then life happened..and my muse was lost. This video inspired me to create again!🥰 thank you ❣️

This is an awesome video. My small advice would be use two water cups, literally one to rinse of the paint and one to rinse off that "dirty" water. It just keeps your palette and painting from getting muddy.

Other tips: cover your paints with plastic if you're coming back to them so they don't dry out.

DO NOT leave your brushes soaking with the water above the metal part. Water will get in there and make the wood swell and crack your brush or make the glue fall off. You can also damage the brush if they're soft bristles by leaving it to soak and having the weight of the brush on the bristles. It bends the brush.

Make a color wheel

Remember that acrylic can paint on almost anything so get creative with your canvases. Old pieces of wood, plastic, cardboard (not too wet).

So I'm trying to get into acrylic painting, went to the art store thinking I knew what I needed to get but then realized I had no idea what I needed after looking at the billion different types of brushes and stuff.
So this is very helpful. Thanks!

Hi! I'm an artist and I'm 13 years old. I've been painting for around 2 years. I wasn't in painting before because my country's education system sucks. There was no art support in my previous school nor for sports too but then one day I changed my school and this one is better. There isn't sports support too but they teach art luckily. As there has been Covid from last probably 2 years. I haven't gone to my new school till now... So there were our online art classes and the teacher didn't teach us anything about art... They just give us assignment like draw a beautiful scenery... No teaching how and what to... They just used to throw assignments with time alloted... As I had zero art experience... I surfed it on internet (Mainly YouTube) and my first drawing went out pretty nice and that gave me a kick to start... My first drawing was made with many materials like wax colours, plastic crayons, oil pastels, sketch pens etc. and most were of my cousin's... And I did many assignments with many more materials and gained some experience about ART and now there aren't art classes anymore in this standard... So I started painting by my own... At first I tried many styles like doing crayons, sketches, oil pastels, mandala and others but nothing was my thing and after a while I came into painting I tried Water colours, Poster colours, Gouche, Oils but nothing worked then I came to know about acrylics and I gave them a try and that became my thing... *I'm an acrylic artist now and it's been around two years and I still use a Paper Plate as a Palette, Primary Kit of acrylic paints, Tissue Papers but when I run out of them I prefer taking a sponge or a cloth, Flat and Round brushes only...I use a flat brush for blending and background and round brush's for lining, filling etc. as putting more or less pressure... And regular papers like A4 size sheets as a surface to paint on... And I use cello tape as a masking tape after applying it over some surface and peeling it off and repeating the process until it feels like has lost some gum and will not damage the paper and most of the times I apply it directly and use it* ... And I shared it all just to show you guys some hacks or diy's kind of so that you'll understand that you don't need any expensive material to make an art piece... Only skills matter:)

I really love using a slow dry medium in my paints, makes blending much easier if you work slower!

I always like giving border to my paintings to give it a more cleaner look. That's why I always use magic tape. Thank you so much for these types of tutorials.💜
