I'm sorry to say, but your first sentence, "They have written several books (sixteen by 2013.)" is incorrectly punctuated. The basic rule is that if you were to remove everything within the parentheses, the sentence must maintain the integrity of both its grammar and punctuation. In your example, you would lose the period and violate this rule. Furthermore, a period is only used within parentheses if the contents are themselves a complete sentence. At that point, you end the previous sentence with a period and then append your idea. (It would look like this.)
